Alright, so it's been a couple of days since my switchover to the dark side (clipless). So far, I really enjoy all of what people say about it, power transfer, pedal form, etc.

However, my favorite method of speed checking is the short, sweet whip skid. Unfortunately, I've noticed I've lost that ability with my Eggbeater setup. Typically, I use the back leg/foot to whip the rear out, but now the rotation of my foot clips me out.

I have considered the following:

1. I am using the standard Eggbeater MTB cleat on a pair of SIDI road shoes. The result is that it feels like I am pedaling on an ice cube, albeit attached to my foot. It is possible that the amount of rocking/floating that occurs is reducing my 'whipping' leverage. The solution to this would be to get something like this:

2. I am doing the whip skid completely wrong or with bad form. If I want to whip the back wheel left, I turn the front wheel left slightly, then lock up and immediately straighten my front wheel while fishtailing the rear wheel with my back right leg. My form definitely feels a little 'off,' as it is not always consistent.

Anyone out there using eggbeaters on road shoes? Do you use the 3 hole cleat? Or do you use some other pontoon out there that works for all shoes/cleats?

Thanks for your help.

which release angle do you have your cleats installed in?
I have crank bros pedals on all my bikes and I have never unclipped without me trying to.

I have it set to the 20 degree release angle. I have heard the same things as your testimony, and I think it's because I'm using road shoes. I think my first order of business will have to be to get that 3 hole cleat I linked to.

I've got egg beaters on mtb shoes and have it set on 15 degrees and have absolutely no problems whip skidding or doing any skidding at all. I've never had an accidental unclip.

I'm not sure what's going on with your whip skidz. It may be bad form that's really doing you in. One thing that moving into using clipless pedals is adjusting for the fact you may unclip due to wiggling your foot out of control during pedaling and skidding. I don't know whether the type of shoe is making a huge difference - someone else may be able to answer that.

My technique (for a right sided fish tail) is as follows using SPD clips. I also want to note that as you get more adjusted to using your clipless pedals please consider adding more tension to the pedals.

Decide to fishtail
Lift ass off seat
Begin lower ass quickly and lock pedals.
Piston left leg in order to create the force to shoot my tail out in a direction.

Good luck, destroy dem tires, dey da devil.

Thanks for the tips. I'll definitely give it a shot and see how it goes. If I'm interpreting you right, I've been whipping my skids out all wrong.
