Clydesdales/Athenas (200+ lb / 91+ kg) - So...about these man boobs

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I am getting the impression that pedaling around on the pavement may target the lower body a bit more than the upper body. As a larger guy, I think I share the same problem as a lot of other bigger guys. Yep, the dreaded man boobs, man-mories, or whatever you want to call them; they aren't pretty.
What is the best way to target that area of the body? Am I going to have to hit the gym and do a bunch of upper body exercises that target the pectorals or would I be better off using some gimmick like the Shake Weight? Are there particular exercises that are most effective?
Please save me from needing a "bro" or "man-zier!"

You can't "target" where fat is lost, only reduce your overall body fat percentage.

It sounds like he is looking to tone and firm up his moobs, not necessarily burn the fat there.

I had a job in an ice cream shop when I was in my teens. I weighed 120 pounds at 5'2". Scooping ice cream for 30 hours a week is a work out and guess which arm looked sleeker and slimmer? The one that did most of the scooping. I know I didn't burn fat in that arm, but muscle tone can make a world of difference even under a padding of extra weight. I think too many people ignore how much of a visual improvment they can get from toning because they're obsessed with the fat.

It really depends how much fat you got on it. If you have massive amounts of fat, a little extra muscle isnt going to be very noticable. That being said, a stregth training program is great for balancing muscles and building up your metabolism. Nothing wrong with working out your chest, but cutting the fat will have the most drastic visual effect for now :)

Thank you for the tip. I will look into these things.
"Moobs," I like that word, haha. You are correct that I am mainly looking to tone up that part of my body. We aren't talking about Meatloaf sized moobs, so I think some extra muscle tone would be noticeable.

that's the last place you will lose fat/weight. change your lifestyle including adding cross training and shed your weight the best you can. you must include weight training to increase muscle mass which will in turn raise your metabolism. this is what will lose your weight/fat. include upper chest exercises like elevated pushups and bench presses.
I've dropped over a hundred pounds, and am within striking distance (25 pounds +/-) of the "proper" weight for a male my height and build and I'm still waiting for my "moobs" to fade away. While I'm disappointed it hasn't happened yet, it's heartening to hear at least one opinion that they're the last to go. I'd like to think there's still hope ahead.

Remember 25 lbs is still a large amount of volume and chances are they will significantly decrease once you lose the last bit of weight. Great work :)

Correct. Do some upper body exercises to tone the muscle.

I think anytime you loose over 100 lbs, there is goin to be excess skin that will contribute to the moobs. Perhaps building in muscle will be the best thing to fill out some of that excess skin.
Now, if someone could explain why I suddenly want to watch Fight Club.
Some foods contribute to moobs. You may be consuming them without knowing. Eliminate them and then exercise to build muscle under the flab.
Exercise is the best way. For example, in his DVD Kettlebell Solution for Fat Loss and Mental Toughness Mike Mahler said he doesn't do flys and other chest exercises because he doesn't want to build his boobs. Instead he concentrates on shoulders and back and elsewhere. I'm NOT saying his way is the best... merely something for you to consider.
You don't need a gym membership or a personal trainer. Go to YouTube and look up Ross Enamait. All of his bodyweight exercises offer plenty of free instruction.

You cannot target areas of your body for fat loss. In other words, you cannot 'spot reduce'. Doing push ups or bench presses may even make it worse, because you increase the mass in the chest area. Just ride your bike more or eat less.

Moobs are (is?) the new black.

Cycling will strengthen the leg muscles in a way that it won't do for the pecs. But yours isn't a problem of not doing enough bench presses. With all due respect, and no offense, it's fat and not muscle definition. Cycling will help you burn fat all over your body.
You don't really have to choose, though. I bike, kayak, hike, swim, lift weights, and engage in carnal activities. Some of this stuff (cycling) happens more often than other stuff (paddling, hiking), and for longer durations (weight lifting is maybe 20 to 30 mins per day; cycling is at least an hour, typically). Any exercise you do is going to benefit you in its own way.

My experience too. After losing half the weight I need to lose I am suffering from the Dolly Parton effect. Given that I am a woman it isn't all that bad.

Quit acting special.
Lower body exercise (cycling) that helps a person lose weight reduces upper body fat on boys AND girls.
Pushups will reduce the jiggle or let you flex your pecs.
