Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - And it begins... my intro to bicycling and fixed

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Picked up my Surly Steamroller from my LBS about an hour ago. All stock as of now... but heck, I won't need more than this for a while. I'm apparently out of shape, my legs are going to hate me for the next few weeks I'm sure.

Cell phone pic for now, but I plan on doing some photos with lighting and all that fun junk here soon

...and in true SSFG form, you setup a photoshoot before you log 10 miles on it.

Welcome to the club :)

yeah...take pictures of your bike.

Also, if thats a brand new model of the Steamroller I strongly suggest upping the gear ratio abit.

Well, in Davis CA anyway. Muckybrake rules!

what ratio is it now?

If you are new to cycling AND fixed then leave the rear brake on, it won't hurt. FWIW I run two brakes.

Congrats on the new bike dude!

Hey TejanoTrackie, are you in living in Davis? I made the mistake of not bringing my bike while visiting some friends in between jobs. SuPer bike friendly place. It reminds me of Logan ut without all the Mormons haha

No, I don't live in Davis. My comment was meant as a joke based on the fact that bike riders can get a ticket there if they don't have a rear brake, which is the reason for the infamous Muckybrake. I live in the DFW metroplex in Texas, which is totally bike unfriendly, but the cops don't care about bikes and won't hassle you about brakes.

We also have BUI's... take a guess what that means. It takes 3 squad cars as well.

But California law states only 1 brake is needed, so it's perfectly legal to have only one. That's the reason for the Muckybrake.

I had a whole reply typed up and accidentally closed the tab.

Anyway, yes, it's a pelican, love the case. I can't remember the gear ratio, my friends were over and were talking about it but I forgot. I'll pick up on all that soon enough, I'm a quick learner.

Back brake will go soon once I'm a bit more used to riding, front brake will always stay on. I'll give it at most a week before that back brake goes. Don't want to wear down the rim.

I'm setting myself up for a 12 mile round trip ride in the morning, the best USA beer bar is having a pancake breakfast with an amazing selection of some of the best stouts in the world to go with it... I was going to drive, but heck, I'll kill myself biking it. Wish me luck.
