Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Quill Stem + Shim Question

Two questions:

1. I have a 26.0 Stem and a 25.4 bar. I've tried using a cut up strip of a soda can as a shim but the bar is still slipping when I put my weight on it, no matter how much I tighten the stem. If I invest in an actual shim product like this (http://www.amazon.com/Problem-Solvers-Handlebar-26-0mm-Stainless/dp/B001CK0RDM/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1305989913&sr=8-6) will it actually work much better? Or am I better off just getting a whole new stem?

2. Can anybody recommend a simple, classic-looking 25.4 quill stem that has a clean front look like the Nitto Dynamic?

I don't like how you can see the screw head from the front of the Nitto Technomic.

Finding something cheaper than a Nitto would also be nice.

Your "this" link doesn't work but I'm assuming you're asking about the Nitto shim. It will work much better than a soda can shim. Overtightening your clamp bolt is doing nothing but potentially weakening your stem.

Fixed the link. Yeah basically a stainless steel aluminum shim. I was getting worried about overtightening. The $10 shim is cheaper than getting a whole new stem so I'll have to try it out.

Beer cans must be a bit thicker than coke cans. Mine would still slip with the shim. And it's an excuse to go have a beer.

Fosters is better than PBR, the wider can allows you to get two wraps around the bar, and a better shim.

The origin 8 stem is a pretty close knock off to the nitto you posted. Its a solid steam, cheaper, and avalible in every shop on the contintent.

Yeah. I noticed those were pretty similar to the nitto stems. And they're not that much more expensive than the shims! If the beer cans don't work our for some reason I'm surely going with the origin 8's. Thanks.

Those Origin 8 stems are known to have a lot of inconsistencies in actual clamp size and strip fairly easily.

hmmm. cheap for a reason eh? I think a good clamp fit is important. Therefore, in the meantime, I'll concentrate on trying as many different beers as I can.
