I need to replace the rear axle nuts on my 70s falcon olympic road bike. I put an adjustable spanner on the rear axle and it read out 9mm, so i went ahead and bought some 9mm axle nuts, but they don't fit...very close but don't fit. Are the axles going to be imperial? How do I measure them? The axle nuts from my old peugeot fit it but i need those nuts for the peugeot!

Take the good one in to the LBS and have them match it up as there are 4 or 5 sizes. Could be a 9.5 or SAE.

Thread pitch is the other , more important part of the fit,
I have a 9mm axle front and rear on my sturmey Elite drum brake hubs, its a 9x1
but more typically its a 10x1 rear axle , example: Shimano .. hubs..
Falcon just made the frame , they bought the bits that bolt on it from another manufacturer,
SO quoting the brand painted on the frame tubes
is not too meaningful as to explaining what the components are..
