I am getting the boat ready for the season and I just happened
to slip on one of the life jackets. Three years ago I got the largest
one Walmart had. Adult Oversize. It is way too large now. So
large I fear it might slip over my head even with the straps as
tight as they will go! Before it lacked about six inches coming
together in the front!

Off to Wally Wally for a new life jacket!

That would be a good cost though, right?

But you know how to swim. ;) The coast guard requires you to have a PFD, not necessarily to be wearing it. Mine lives out its life strapped to the hull of my kayak.

Fat lot of good it'll do you there if you hit your head when you go overboard.

Funny you brought this up. I fish tournaments regularly, and my leftover straps have been growing all season. I fished one this last weekend, and I have it tightened all of the way, and it is still a little loose. I just paid $100 for that last season. I may be able to save it for my winter fishing jacket to wear over a few layers.

I'm actually more worried about dehydration! :eek: ( Sea kayakers don't have much opportunity to hit their heads; there's nothing but deep water, and the boat is too narrow to hit on. Plus, in cold water, I wear a dry suit, also known as a balloon. )

Any one that goes to sea in a kayak needs a blow to the head now and then!

Our boat will do about five mph, six on a real good day!

We have been out in some rough weather, but it is a long narrow winding
lake and you are never that far from shore. Plus there are boats out and
about most of the time. I do put the jacket on if I feel it might be needed.

...I've been in the water, unexpectedly, in Lake Mead (jumping in after my then-girlfirend who started to panic a bit while swimming). Went in without a vest--and watched our boat drift away a bit, with the sole pasenger struggling to fire it up and come get us. Those were a long 5 minutes in the water.

I would never again go out over open water without a vest.

I am puzzled by people who go boating that cannot swim and do not wear a life vest. Seems silly
