Hi,

I am moving to San Francisco this weekend and need a little help. I'm looking for good bike routes in/around San Francisco. I will be living in Bernal Heights (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=bernal+heights+san+francisco,+ca&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Bernal+Heights,+San+Francisco,+California&gl=us&z=14). I've done tons of Googling and have not been able to find a site with routes. Could someone give me a link or let me know of some good routes? I'm looking for a some ~ 15, 25, 40, and 70 mi routes.

I'm a road rider, do some racing, so this will be for training, not necessarily scenery. And I'm okay with bike trails as long as they're not the type where I'm expected to go sub 20mph. Probably obviously, I prefer lower traffic/stops on my rides.

Thanks for the help! I'm psyched to move/ride out there! :thumb:

San Francisco's 49 Mile Drive has scenery, sites, and all the climbing you can handle. There's info about the sites and a downloadable map here. (http://www.onlyinsanfrancisco.com/maps/49miledrive.asp)

Here are a bunch of classic rides: http://www.inl.org/bicycle/routes.html

You can also meet up with one of the many local groups, including the Sports Basement (Google it), or any of these: http://www.bikecal.com/

Good luck.

Mods- I wonder if we should have a sticky thread with all our collective responses to this question, since it seems to come up a lot...

Welcome to San Francisco check out Valencia Cyclery for maps also Box Dogs Bikes on 14th (voted best in the city) for routes etc. Get on your bike and ride you'll see lots of other cyclists just ask them whats doing. PS get a good lock!

San Francisco is a pretty compact area with a whole lot of stop signs. Highly suggest you focus your riding on Marin, lower peninsula, or East Bay. 30 mile ride will get you out of the city and all alone at some point.

Strava, mapmyride.... any of those sites will give you some guidance on where to ride. Unfortunately, it isn't in SF IF you're looking low traffic/open areas of riding.

If you want to hit up the East Bay (an easy BART ride away) you can do some killer hills above Berkeley. The Cal Cycling team has some suggested routes: http://www.calcycling.org/?q=view/routes
Riding over to Marin is great too, you get to ride across the bridge (though I think one side of it is closed right now) and there are lots of roads with few cars and lots of fun curves. Did a ride up through Sausalito, Corte Madera, and then over to Tiburon. That was great fun.
