I am, to say the very least, besides myself with happiness tonight. Yesterday I got an email from my older brother. We used to be daily riding partners touring across PA, NY and Ohio numerous times. But that was 30 years ago; before the responsibilities of marriage, mortgages, kids, car payments, and college got in the way. Eventually, I moved away and we've tried to keep in touch over the years, but nothing like those summers. At times, I've mourned the loss of his presence in my life.

He's battled several illnesses over the years and gave up riding about 15 years ago. I was saddened when I found this out. It was one of his real joys in life. In the last two years, he's been able to get his health back on track, and in his email last night he asked if I knew where he could pick up a serviceable road bike. He's GOING TO START RIDING AGAIN!

One of the downsides to his prolonged illness has been the impact it's had on his financial situation. So, I'm going to give him my late 1980s Specialized Sirrus that's been updated to full ultegra 9 speed with a compact up front. He's calling later this week to arrange a visit where we'll get the bike setup for him and ride for a few days together until he starts to get his cycling chops back.

Sometimes, when you least expect it and often when you're not looking, life gives you a chance to get something back you thought was gone. I've got a connection with my brother again!

Congratulations! Have fun, and be sure to take it slow. Don't let him try to do too much too quickly. And watch out for traffic.

NOS88,
I think that is fabulous! I can appreciate how you feel. This past summer I got to ride with my big brother who was visiting from Dallas. We rode the same route as we did when he was 12 yrs. old and I was 8 and he let me tag along with him on his paper route. It was an incredible experience to do it again all these years later (sans the newspapers). I hope you can share the same kind of feeling with your brother.

Great story NOS88, nothing like riding with family. I know I really like it when my son comes by and we ride together.

Good for you! I know you will enjoy the company. My brother who rides recently moved back from Denver to within 2 hrs of me and we have already met several times to ride.

With the long holiday weekends that come around in the summertime (as opposed to the Christmas season in the dead of winter) - we all ought to think about the opportunities of going bike riding with family and old friends.
