The headset on my 1976 Gran Sport is shot. It has three indexed positions--straight ahead, left, or right. The bearings are probably in races and replacing them with loose balls might help, but I think I will likely have to replace it.
But with what? When I posted photos earlier, the consensus seemed to be that the Campy headset probably wasn't original. The 1976 catalog on Mark Bulgier's site doesn't give a spec for the headset. I have a tendency to replace ailing headsets with cheap ones from Tange, and may do so here again. But still, it would be nice to know what I SHOULD be doing instead. Does anyone have any ideas?

I'd go with the Tange Levin. That's what I have on my GS. It's a quality headset at a good price, and looks reasonably period-correct. It also has a stack height that allows use of a cable hanger if that's an issue, at least it did on my installation.

Prior to that I had a 105. It was a nice HS but didn't really look right and when I switched back to cp brakes I had to ditch it as the stack height didn't work.

If the stack height works out, I'd definitely go Tange. Is the fork crown race 26.4 or 27.0? I'd assume the former.

Yeah, Tange headsets are hard to beat.

Here is a picture of the original headset on my Gran Sport. I have no idea who made it but I do like how it looks.
