The nice thing is that once you ride out, six miles in your case (?), it's easy to get back. Suddenly, your motivation is getting home. :D

Get it done!!! The butt hurt will stop after a few more rides.
Keep it up for a couple weeks and you'll start to find that 12mi isn't enough :D

For me the issue with early miles was not fitness, but feeling safe on the streets. At first I actually drove to a local bikepath, then I decided that was stupid and figured out back streets to get there. Finally I took what I considered the busy road there.
Be careful, the next step is feeling comfortable on most streets, once that happens you could end up anywhere.

Congrats.
Isn't it fun when you get in your first ride of double digit miles? I mean before you do that you're always wondering IF yu can do it. Then when its over you wanna do it again. Or at least that's how I felt. I hope you feel that way too.
Again, congrats on the ride.

Keep it up, the miles do get easier with time.

Or they don't get easier, but you go faster.

COngratulations !! See? You really CAN do it !!!!
justtom, For myself the first ten miles, or so, of any ride are the most/more difficult for me 'till everything starts to 'mesh'. Hang in there, it gets better.

thanks for the boost, only did 51/2 this afternoon.might go with my daughter after school gets out for a few laps around the neighborhood, gears seems to be all buggered up again trying to fix them myself only seems to last a few days hopefully i will figure them out one day soon, probably should take it to the shop and have them adjusted right along with the brakes, being that it was slapped together at wall-mart. just cant seem to let my self spend the money on that.

There is nothing wrong with starting out on a walmart bike, but you should have it looked at to make sure it is working properly. A well tuned bike makes all the difference and will make it easier to stick to your goals.

I have just stepped up to 20 miles, today it felt pretty good, took 4- 1 minute breaks and focused on hydration, still a little tough on the butt, getting better evry time out. I`m going to work on pace and cadence before longer distance. Today, average cadence 77, avg speed 13.8 with the breaks.

Very nice! When you have a goal ride half way out and you then have to ride the other half back in.

Outstanding justom, It seems that you struggle and then all the sudden a leap, thats a big leap, I did 20 again this morning, knocked a couple minutes off my time. Keep it up. I`ll be going out again Tuesday morning. I can`t recommend saddle and riding shorts enough, both help alot. Look forward to us talking about 30 or even 40 mile trips.
