Classic & Vintage - Long Weekend -- Anyone wanna get together for a ride in NY/NJ/PA?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

With the long weekend and what's looking like probable good weather in the east, anyone wanna get together for a ride on Sunday or Monday?

Off the top of my head, interesting places could be:

a. The Great Swamp (Basking Ridge area, NJ)
b. Hunterdon County (western NJ...hills, tow paths and micro-breweries)
c. Sussex County (Northern NJ....cows and hills and lakes)
d. Rockland County (Southern NY State...all kinds of fun)
e. Milford, PA (borders on NJ and NY state so we could ride in all 3 states on 1 ride)

Any other suggestions? Any interest?

sounds like a great idea and lots of fun too bad I can't ride :(.

There's also the Pinelands.

I'm up for it, I think, but need to check my wife's schedule to see when I'm free.

Rudi's got a kiddie trailer I think.

So I'm kinda thinking Great Swamp. Any thoughts?

I did, actually, have a burley kiddie trailer once. Sold it many moons ago. So solly.

I've never been to the Great Swamp. Can you toss a somewhat more detailed route suggestion on the table?

If that means you're driving up I-95, can I mooch a ride? I promise to be on my best behavior.

That would be a neat trick...since I don't drive :)

I was hoping to either mooch, or that we'd be off public transit. I might bother my wife, but would prefer not to.

cool, right now it sounds like we're shooting for Sunday as most folks have obligations for Memorial Day. Work is a bit hectic today but I'll try and throw together a route shortly.

There are various NJ Transit stations in the Great Swamp area. I'll have a look at what's around and make sure its running on a Sunday and use that as a starting point.

I may try to ride early Monday in the western Morris/northern Hunterdon/eastern Warren County area. If anyone is interested is a guided hill tour, I can probably accomodate.

I've thought of that. There's a local electrician who's converted one into a utility truck. I think Rob is pretty far north of Philly, though.

I used to live in Morristown and we rode the gilette, Great swamp, Morris Township, Randolph Township area almost every weekend. It's really nice riding area.

BUT

Be out of the swamp an hour or two before sunset or you'll be eaten alive by the NJ state bird.

That's not so bad

How about 30 miles starting at the Madison NJ Transit station at 2pm. We will easily be done and drinking beer before 6 (before we eat lots of bugs)

I checked the website and it appears the trains should be running on Sunday and Madison is a pretty quick train ride from Newark.

working on a route now

I could do Sunday starting early and until maybe 2pm at the latest.....I think i had more spare time when I was employed...

Fender1, to answer your text from earlier, if riding with these folks doesnt work out I'd be up for riding from here.

I could commandeer an ambulance but I'm working Saturday thru Monday and doing 12hr shifts I won't be doing much biking this weekend. Instead I'll be taking care of burns, drunks and shootings. I'd rather go riding.

And Dan, I can't call out sick on Sunday b/c I'll be using a "well" day on Friday for a group ride before the Tour de Cure on the 5th. If you're up for a ride Friday evening (the 3rd), we'll be starting around 1630 or so followed by pizza and beer.

I was thinking early on Sunday for here and I have stuff going on later in the day so I can't go on a trek to NJ, which I would rather do than go to a local party.

Dan, I was just informed my son's in a parade at 1pm on Sunday so I'm out until much later on Sunday, maybe 4pm sorry about that... :twitchy:

I like the route, if it's not too late in the day I'd love to ride. Looks like perfect terrian for the newly rebuilt s3x

I'll commit to hosting a Sunday afternoon ride with burgers and dogs on the grill and a beer later this summer at my place.

To reach Madison on the train that gets there at 1:17 PM, I'd have to leave my house by 10:15 at the latest. Then if I caught the 6:50 PM, I could be home by 9:30 PM or so. Sorry, but I'm not working up any enthusiasm for this!

Aaron, if you hopped on the most convenient SEPTA train and took it to the end of the line, where would that put you? I might be able to meet you somewhere for a ride. Or I could take the RiverLine down to... oh, I dunno, Riverton or something?

Hmmm...well it's quite easy for me to get to Camden and Trenton. How many folks for this do we have?

Could we all just join Fender/Holiday? Where are you schmoes heading?

It sounds to me like Zaphod has a good ride cooked up for those in the northern NJ area, and I don't want to draw anyone away from that. But as an alternative for those who cannot make that ride, how about this: Anyone want to meet up at the Trenton train station, then we take the River Line train down a few stops to get out of the city, and go for a ride out into the farmlands from there? I'm thinking we could start from Bordentown, and do a 30 to 60 mile loop that would get us into the pinelands and back. We could end up at any RiverLine or NJTransit station. Marley, Aaron, anyone? Let me know if you're tentatively interested, and I'll cook something up. I think I have to pick up my son at school ca. 8:30 Sun AM, after which I am a free man.

we're flexible. you could meet us somehow, either taking the train to either Fenders place (old r5 or whatever it is) or the norristown line and we could meet you.

I might do this hilly ride in the Birchrunville area that is west of my place in P-ville.

We can talk more about if when I see you today if you want.

i'm thinking KonAaron, Fender1, maybe Nikkorod and myself get together and we meet you NJ folks near the PA/NJ border and we have a fight, West Side Story style. The winner then determines ride location.

Thoughts?

I guess New Hope would probably be the most appropriate place for something like that.

KonAaron Snake
05-27-11, 08:34 AM
I'll be in New Hope late June, but will have the wife with me. New Hope also tends to be problematic because there is NO transportation out there.

rhm
05-27-11, 08:35 AM
Okay, Hol, here's a scheme. PA'ers park in New Hope. NJ'ers park in Lambertville. We then run a foot race across the Delaware, on the tourist-packed foot bridge. Winner determines whether we ride in PA or NJ. Alternately we could ride up to Frenchtown, cross the river, and ride back. That way we ride approximately equal distances on each side of the river.

New Hope is about ten miles from Doylestown, 11 from Yardley; Lambertville (right across the river) is 11 miles from the West Trenton, or 16 miles from Trenton. All of these have SEPTA stations.

Honestly its a holiday weekend and i'm throwing this out there less than 3 days in advance so I don't have big expectations :) Besides we can always re-use that route.

What if we all started from our respecive abodes and all rode to a central point for a beer?

Thanks for the PM about the ride Zaphod. I don't know how I missed this thread. Oh yeah, I do. Work's been insane getting ready for the Tonys. I'm really looking forward to a long weekend.

Has anyone hit the D&R Canal path? It's part of the East Coast Greenway route. I don't know much about it, but from Bound Brook to Trenton is about 30 miles. If not this weekend, sometime it might be a good ride to meet each other at about the halfway mark between us.
