Classic & Vintage - What would the correct shifters have been for this Deer Head RD??

The RD is on a early '80s Benotto 800. The FD is a Suntour as are the shifters.203588

Thanks in advance.....

It probably varied, but I can tell you that the specs for the Raleigh Portage, which came with Deore XT "Deerhead" mechs, call for Shimano Z408 downtube shifters.

I don't have a downtube shifter listed on VeloBase for the XT M700 group, I think I have a catalog somewhere with the group listed, so I'll see if I can dig that up for you soon. nlerner's suggestion of the Z408 or any other non-group specific shimano shifter would work just fine as well, but since it seems the RD is the replacement part, unless there's something wrong with the current shifters I wouldn't worry about a matching part.

I have owned two bikes with the Elks head or Deer's head and both were Miyata 1000 Touring (http://www.mytenspeeds.com/My_TenSpeeds_1/Feature_Bicycles/Feature_Bicycles_Japan/Miyata_1000_GrandTouring_Mine/MIYATA_1000_GT_1_Start.htm) bikes. Here is a picture of the shifters, and they were identical on both bikes...

I flipped a diamondback apex mtn. bike that had that der. as stock, the shifters were shimano friction. Here is a link detailing it, the one I had was pretty much stock.
