Classic & Vintage - '79 Peugeot cranks/ BB

Hey, i have a '79 Peugeot Super Sport and wanted to put new chain rings on, but as the stronglight cranks that came with are 3-armed its hard to find a chain ring for them, i am thinking about changing the cranks. I already have a tool that i can use to get the cranks off as well. And i have a newer sugino crank just sitting around my place and wanted to replace the stock stronglight crank with it. and i was wondering if anyone knows if the BB is ISO or JIS and if i could put the sugino cranks on my BB without ruining the BB and cranks? thanks

Do you really have the stronglight tool? Its expensive, as they used a unique size (23.35mm). A standard puller is 22mm, and a TA puller is 23mm. Stronglight pullers sell for about $50, or more.

Check out the bb closely. You are close to the time where Peugeot went from french threading to the dreaded Swiss threading (obsolete).

Where was the bicycle made? Many Peugeots are not of French origin. If you have a North American model, then threading issues are no problem.

Also, look at the inside end of your crank arms. What threading is indicated for the pedals? That should be a help and report those numbers here. If you cranks are French then it is most likely that your bottom bracket will be so also.

Were there really Peugeots made outside of France as early as 1979?

The threading for the pedals is the standard 9/16 x 20. and i think it was made in france because i still have the sticker on the bike that says made in france.
and yes, there were peugeots being made in Canada starting mid to late '70s i believe

What does the fixed cup look like (letters/numbers/rings/shape/etc.)?

the fixed cup doesnt look like anything i havent seen before. pretty standard. but i havent taken it off yet or inspected recently so i couldnt tell you if there is anything more on the inside. but there is nothing on the outside

What shape is it (2 flats, octagonal, hexagonal, etc)? Any rings or other markings on the cups?

yeah, thats what it looks like. almost exactly. but the lockring only has 2 holes. i asked a few other local experts around here and it is actually a newer bottom bracket that got put on before i found it. but unfortunately whoever took the cranks off first didnt have the right tool so they threaded the cranks, so i couldnt even get them off with the special french threaded puller. kinda pissed. but thanks for all the help guys
