Very tough ride for me. This is definitely not a climber's event. Most of the climbing was at 1-3% grade so I was struggling to stay with the faster bigger guys. The first 20 miles were mostly climbing into a headwind. On the first real descent, a crosswind knocked my left contact out of my eye, so I had to ride the rest of the event (around 80 miles) with one eye. I got dropped from a 20+ person peloton on the descent around mile 35 and had to ride alone to Venticopa where I luckily was able to re-join a bunch of the peloton who had stopped to refuel (I didn't stop once during the event because I carried a lot of food and three bottles of perpetuem on me). The peloton carried me to the base of Heartbreak Hill around mile 72 where I started to feel the effects of the high level of exertion in the first two hours of the race (avg HR was well over 170). From mile 74 to the finish at mile 100, I lost about 5-10 minutes of time relative to the guys I started Heartbreak Hill with. Overall a fun event but definitely my least favorite of the three King of the Mountains events.

The second half of that ride is just so darn boring it makes my brain go nuts.

Wife and I rode this on our tandem. We had a great day, loved the scenery and beautiful weather. Started a bit chilly and windy but ended perfectly.

Anyone know what happened to the other tandem that crashed? We saw it go by in the back of a pickup truck and figured it must be bad news.

That was my pick-up and I was the first one on the scene. It was Joe Peterson and his stoker Kim Barker. Joe is a veteran RAAM rider and he and his stoker were perparing for this year's RAAM. It seems a girl on a single cut in front of him and took out his front wheel. He had cuts on his face, a bloody nose, cuts on the inside of his mouth and both knees cut up. He came by my house later in the evening after getting medical attention to pick up his bike. He was beat up pretty good, but ready to get back on his bike.

Whoa! I'm glad he's okay!
