On May 27,2010 I went to the local Wally Wally and bought an
$88 Next MTB. Cheapest full size bike they had.

I rode it around the neighborhood a few times over the next few
days. I bought a computer to track my rides and started going
out every morning. Two or three miles to start with, then five and
six. It was not fun. At 288lbs, a bad stomach, and completely out
of shape, it was a major struggle. Half way through my first long
ride, an eight mile attempt, I nearly returned the bike, I was just
across the street from where I bought it.

365 days, 12,002 miles, -70lbs, -10" in the waist. Best day, 126,
best day average, 22mph, overall average, 14.9mph, three days
over 100 miles. twenty days over 80 miles.

Next; $94, tax remember.
Used Huffy Savannah; $10, $30 repairs
Schwinn Varsity; free
Ironman MTB; free, $55 repairs
Schwinn Avenue; $204
Spalding ATB; $10
Sold Next; $50
Sold Huffy; $60
Sold Varsity; $75
Wreaked Avenue, wheel failed, Schwinn, Wally took care of
it; Replaced with Schwinn Aluminum Comp, new tires and
tubes, wheels trued, $NC.
Trek 720 MT; $40, repairs $155
Sold Schwinn Comp" $275

Still have Trek 720, Ironman, Spalding ATB

65 years old, take no regular medication, passed flight medical
in March, married to retired model, retired, work one day a month,
about three hours. Annual salary $42,000, plus teachers pension,
National Guard pension, trust check. Home is paid for, car is paid
for.
One daughter, five grand kids. Youngest grand daughter will be
in ninth grade this fall, she is 11!

Well done! If they had a little icon of someone bowing or tipping the hat, I would use it now.

You are an inspiration.

Very cool story, inspirational for my jelly gut to apply myself and earn the great rewards.

Nice story. I want to tell the same story 11 months from now. More or less.

Maybe I misunderstood, but is your $42,000 annual salary for that three hours of work a month? If so, I want that job. (I'm retired too, and consult about 3 to 5 hours a month for pocket money).

Thanks to all. I tried to set a personal best today, but ran out of
time and energy. Got soaked twice. Took on the biggest hill in the
county. Left the house at 9:00am and had company coming at
5:00pm. Got home at 4:56.

120.01 miles. Completely spent. Had to cook burgers for six.
Everything hurts! Only bright spot, someone asked "Doesn't
that hurt your butt?"! I have a Zefal gel seat and never thought
about it for the entire ride.

Excellent job! To encourage you a bit, about 4 years ago I graduated out of this group (at 193 - 6' 1"). My weight this morning was 192. I won't say it stayed that way for four years, but I always knew what to do when it started to climb. Losing weight as many of us can attest is hard, keeping it off, harder. With cycling, you have a weapon.

It is nice to be scrawny. My top weight, about 15 years ago, was 270 lbs.

BHOFM: What a wonderful story. This retirement/consulting livestyle is great. Don't know about the 12000 mile/year thing butt as my B17 is breaking in It seems more possible now. I put myself thru college working as a line boy never got my license. If I ever achieve that perfect power to weight ratio getting it is on my bucket list.

Board member of a family owned bank. I just sit in on the first meeting of the month, and
on rare occasions special meetings. My brother in law is the chairman. Dad is not able to
attend any more. He will be 90 in July.

Thanks again for all the positive replies.

It seems the bikes at our local Wally are put together reasonably well. The original tires went about 700 miles and the knobs were
gone on the rear. Put on road tread innovas. Brakes grabbed and squeaked from the start, new pads stopped that. I have nothing
bad to say about the bike, it served me well for nearly 6000 miles and I got back most of my money at the yard sale. Even the
seat was OK. I think the rear suspension was a big plus getting started, it saved the rear wheel from my bad riding habits at the
time. I learned to get out of the seat when it got rough.
