Classic & Vintage - Anyone tried Second Skin, Liquid Skin or similar under clamps

I'm getting ready to assemble a bike with clamp on everything. I'm just wondering if anyone has tried the Liquid Skin type products under the clamps to protect the paint.

They are waterproof, invisible and most of all breathable. Seems like the perfect thing to protect the paint.

i use liquid electrical tape. it can be found for cheap at home depot and the like.

I've never thought of that.

I keep a stock of thin, clear self-adhesive vinyl sheets. I cut strips to size, and adhere them to the inside clamp bands before wrapping them around the frame tubes. I also cut longer strips as invisible chainstay protectors.

I'll see how it goes. I think the perfect place for a test is on pump pegs. It might keep the rattle down as well.

Even though the material itself may be waterproof, the "breathability" of it makes me think it will hold on to water, which is what porous things tend to do. I would stick with good ol' electrical tape, and apply it sticky-side to the clamp-on so you can trim the excess before it goes on the frame.

I'm not familiar with Liquid Skin but meant for human skin I would wonder if it was tough enough to protect against the edge of a clamp, the part that IME will dig most into a tube.

I use Evo Stik Impact (http://www.bostik.co.uk/diy/product/evo-stik/Impact/6) which, designed to be used with "Wood, Ceramics, Rubber, Paper, Metals, Decorative Laminates, Card , Cork, Stone, Leather, Fabrics, Rigid PVC" is tough and durable. Any excess can be rubbed off with finger tip.

I agree with this, and I think most common types of tape will suffer the same fate.

I did do an experiment about a year ago with some clear mylar film (salvaged from packing material designed to protect the front of an LCD in shipping,) and it seems to hold up. It's non-adhesive and a bit slippery, so it was a bit of a pita to get the clamp and mylar positioned correctly.

I think it's working ok, but I probably wouldn't bother to do it again.

I use Helicopter tape - Its a polyurethane tape developed to be used on the leading edge of helicopter blades - Sticks well is almost clear and very weather proof - It is thick enough for the parts to bite into and yet the paint is still protected - One small roll in the tool box goes a long way (I keep mine in the frig)...
