Has disappeared. Anybody know where I can find them? And in the same vein, does anybody know where I can find Chicago Schwinn serial numbers more recent than 1982? Seems like this question comes up a lot, but I have found nothing in over an hour of searching.

As far as I know if you have a headbadge with four numbers it goes.. the numbered day of the year and then year of a decade. So 3336 is on my Super Sport, 1996, 333rd day. I hope I can help because I know little around here.

The headbadge and frame style says it's an early '84. The paint says '85. The serial number is SC 400908. The frame has a decal saying it was made in the USA. If I recall correctly, Schwinn continued manufacturing frames in Chicago until '92, but serial number information seems to be lacking. I don't know why I can't just buy a bike and ride it, and forget about the rest, but it seems I can't.

The Chicago factory was closed permanently in December 1983.

Domestic U.S. production moved to Greenville, MS, starting in mid-1981, and in 1982 60,000 bikes were built in Greenville. Schwinn continued to use "Chicago" on the head badges since the company remained headquartered there until the November, 1992 bankruptcy. If the bike was made in the U.S. in '84 or '85, it was made in Greenville. The Greenville plant closed in October, 1991.

Paramount production moved from the Chicago factory "cage" to a new Paramount Design Group facility in Waterford, WI, in 1980/1981, and remained there until the new post-bankruptcy owners of Schwinn (Zell-Chilmark and Scott Sports) put the Paramount "to sleep" in 1994.

Thanks Scooper. I have an '87 Prelude, that I believe to be Panasonic built, but still says Chicago on the headbadge. However, does not say that it was built in the USA. Can I safely call it a Panasonic?

I've thought for years that the late eighties Circuit, Tempo, Premis, and Prelude models were all made in Greenville, but there have been enough questions about the country of origin for different models and model years in the mid-to-late eighties that I just don't know. Sorry.

I realized, after I rote that, that the serial number marks it as Japanese.
