I recently purchased a set of Araya red tubular rims which I meticulously polished and then built up to complete my Park Pre restoration. I've been slowly tinkering with this bike and working out some kinks, and probably have less than 30 miles on the wheels when...

Riding on a tight stretch of road with a delivery truck on my left, I approach a rain gutter and notice that it's missing the perpendicular slats to prevent my wheel from dropping in. There was just enough pavement between the truck and the drain, except there was also a lot of gravel, which caused my rear wheel to slide right into the drain regardless, gouging up my freshly built wheels.

Oh well, more sanding...

and back to new. I normally enjoy (or at least don't mind) polishing alloy parts. However, knowing that I had so recently polished these same rims took all enjoyment out of the task.

glad all it did was some minor scraping :)

A wise choice.
Destroy your rims on the drain grate rather than get all tangled up in the wheels of the truck passing you at breakneck speed just 12" to your left. Don't forget to DUCK for their right side mirror!

(is it a wonder we hate city roads?)

Yes. Or rediscovered the utility of fenders after a ride on a wet day on a road frequented by horsies? Country roads are much worse for a city mouse like me.

I prefer city roads to country roads. Those 15 foot wide pieces of farm equipment really make an impression. :)

Shoulda bunny hopped...

Not sure if that was a joke or not, but I def. hopped up a curb once time..I was getting forced off the road by a driver who didnt see me. If I stopped I was going to get hit, so I approached a curb and hopped it. Clean landing, nothing bent. I was stoked. I can't do that on my MTB.

Shoulda bunny hopped...

It definitely crossed my mind, but I thought I had enough room to squeeze by and there was a lot of gravel in the landing area (a scary prospect with a large truck on my left).

Sorry for the damage - When I first started riding in Italy I destroyed both tubulars on a grate - One of the locals helped me home and said don't feel so bad - It was just your turn...

So glad your OK...
