Hey,
I'm about to race in my first CX race in 2 weeks. My only bike is a SS/fixed (it has a rear flip-flop hub). I was wondering if anybody has, or does race on a fixed gear. If so, what situations should i prepare myself for? I'd much rather ride fixed so that i wouldn't need to install/run a rear brake, though maybe i may not even need a rear brake while riding my freewheel.

i was wondering about the same thing. the way i see it--how are you going to dismount when you can't coast? looks like on a fixie you'll have to stop first, then dismount.

I've seen and I'll give you credit for doing it. The tough part is planning your mounts/dismounts. W/o a freewheel, you can't coast into a barrier clipped into one pedal.

put a bmx ss freewheel on one side of the flip/flop and go, you'd have to brakes then too though

I think you will be fine with just a front brake SS in fact two weeks ago at my weekend race someone plowed into my rear brake and I had to unclip it to finish the race. No problems. I think mounting fixed would be the harder part. you wont be able to coast into a dismount but you will have great controll up to the point you do dismount. You'll have great traction on your front wheel too riding fixt.

A fixie rider raced this weekend and blew a bunch of riders away. It can be done.
