Clydesdales/Athenas (200+ lb / 91+ kg) - Stupid things we do that keep us off the bike

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

So I have been looking forward all week to an all day mtb ride Monday with some friends. A new place opened up with 60+ miles of trails that are apparently awesome. Yesterday I take the kids to the pool and while they are playing I thought I would get a little workout in and start doing some laps. I miss judge the distance to the wall and whack my hand HARD on it :bang:. Jammed my thumb pretty good and now I can't grip anything, so it looks like I am going to miss the ride.

Just made me think, what other bonehead/careless/goofy things have we done that cause us to miss bike time?

Usually it's drink too much the night before for me.

Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of boneheaded things I've done to myself, but that's the most consistent.

I work.

This keeps me off the bike and it certainly is pretty damn stupid!

Work, LOL, me too. I broke my wrist in October, just now getting to where I can do some distance without to much pain. Just last week I was trimming a tree, without safety glasses and scratched my left eye when the saw chunked something into it. Took me off the bike for a day, vision was so cloudy from the scratches.

My stupid thing was on a bike. Last year I set my front brakes too tight on my bike the night before an MTB ride. On the ride, I was recording a partner at 25 mph, approaching a turn so I reached back to place the recorder into my jersey pocket.

I did what would be a routine feather of the front brakes but forgetting I had tightened them the night before, the brakes locked up and I flipped at 25 mph separating my shoulder! I was of the bike for atleast 3 weeks. :(

One of the active posters on the Commuter Forum, ItsJustMe, has this signature line, "Work: the 8 hours that separates bike rides."

I'm lucky that I can commute a fair distance to work, including long distance routes on weekends to go in for a few hours, so getting to work becomes a motivator and goal itself, yet does limit the time I can ride. Not enough sleep, due to work or socializing, is probably my worst demon.

Family.

Short of that, nothing is stupid enough to get in the way ;)

Ride forty miles the day before without a eating before the ride...

Guarenteed recovery day required.

Last April, two days before the 200K brevet I had been training for all winter, I somehow injured my knee getting out of bed. I had to bail on the brevet, though I did a 42-mile ride that day, which was about the limit of what my knee would tolerate.

Since I hadn't fully woken up when I hurt my knee, I have no idea what I did to cause the injury, other than getting older.

Heh, yep it's still possible to operate a bike with a remaining good thumb. :)

I'm sure there are some riders good enough to do mountain biking 1 handed, but I am not one of them. ;) Especially since it is my left thumb so I would have no front brake...
