Touring - Skin Cancer

As I sit here in front of my computer, gingerly fingering a fresh four inch incision across my left clavicle - yesterday's residence of a large basal cell carcinoma - I am compelled to urge everyone to apply sunscreen liberally and often. I promise you, a little prevention now could save you a world of hurt in your future - not to mention a couple thousand bucks...

I've been laughed at, in good-natured fashion, by other cyclists who I've chatted with for covering up from throat to ankles and to fingertips when I ride. This year I even found a legionaire style hat with a drape I can use around the lower part of my face since some chemical in the usual sunscreens breaks me out in a horrid allergic reaction. Even the ones made for 'sensative skin'. I had lots of burns and tans from childhood to early 20's. I'm not willing to increase my already significant risk of skin cancer by thumbing my nose at the sun for 4 to 16 hours a day when I'm riding around home or touring. So, yeah. I'll cover myself up as much as possible, smiling as I get teased by all those bronze-skinned cyclists while I keep an eye on every little freckle and blemish. :P

Best of luck to you man. Hope all continues well after your surgery. I wear short sleeved jerseys in favor of long sleeves and cover my legs at all times. And due to an unrelated problem have begun to wear a head scarf under my helmet that covers the back of my neck. I use Zinc Oxide on my nose and face & ears. Thanks for the reminder to cover up.

Best of luck to ya and a complete and speedy recovery. I drive my kids, mother, brother and nieces/nephews nuts with the lecture of needing sunscreen. Sunscreen is something you will always find with me.

dude you just made an impact. I was about to go ride and had literally thrown the sunscreen down thinking "It's just for an hour." Now I'm going to pick it back up and apply some. I not only wish you a speedy recovery but low pain levels as well.
