Classic and Vintage Bicycles: What's it Worth? Appraisals and Inquiries - Univega Superlight w/ Campagnolo

A friend has asked me to help him sell the following bike.

Univega Superlight with a partial camapgnolo group. I would like to get some more info on the bike, components, and a sense of value before I put a price tag on it. We would like to sell the bike as a whole but if he can get more parting it out he will do that as well.

Univega Superlight- columbus tubing (not sure which type of tubing... sticker is peeled off),
48 cm frame
Campagnolo record hubs laced to tubular Saturn rims
Camopagnolo Strada crankset... I'm not sure if this is record or super record... please let me know if you can id the cranks better
Campagnolo Pedals
Campagnolo Seatpost
Campagnolo Brake Calipers
Campagnolo front derailleur
DuraAce Rear derailleur
Exage brake levers... my thinking they are not original
Concor Supercorsa Saddle... leather and in great shape for its age
Has brand new tubular tires

Id on the campy group would be much appreciated.

Frame is in great condition with a few nichs in the paint and some "custom" decals that look like they were done with an paint pen... I'm not sure if the paint pen will come off but it is very subttle.

The size of the frame is going to hurt the value. The really small and really big bikes generally are not worth as much as the more in demand sizes of 52-58cm. The crank is Super Record if those are Campagnolo rings. NR and SR arms are identical with only chainrings determining which crank it is.

You will always get more money for it in pieces.

Nice bike, but with rust showing, decals peeling, not going to grab top dollar. The replacement RD and brake levers won't help, either.

Size (shows 50 on the BB) isn't necessarily bad; but in this case - a C&V race style bike with tubies, I do think it may be a limited market.

My opinion - parting out gets you more money.

XS size brings a nice premium around here.

+1 But without thorough cleanup, value is going to be held back. Tubulars limits market as well.

I have to jump on the part it out band wagon too.
Small frame, not a bad thing in of itself but to get the short top tube they relaxed the head angle to avoid toe clip overlap. So it goes. It won't handle all that great compared to a bigger sister of the same model.

I figured parting it out would bring more money but its also more work...

Will anyone take a stab at a good asking price for the complete bike compared with value if parted out?

I've got some figure in mind just want to make sure the are in line with others before I tell my friend he can probably get xxx dollars complete or xxx parted out.

I'm likely going to sell this for him either way.

I think the plan for this bike is to part it out and rebuild with good but cheaper used components and sell it locally.

I have someone comming to look at the bike today... can anyone give me a fair price on the frame including campagnolo record headset and bottom bracket?

Just the frame, headset and bb = Somewhere around $200

Complete = Somewhere around $500

I sold the bike complete for $400 but it sound like the girl who bought it wants to sell me back the parts at the end of the summer when she moves and just keep the frame when she has to ship it back east. I was figuring $200 for the frame. I will probably get first shot at buying back the parts at a discount since I gave her a decent deal on the bike in the first place. I just hope she takes care of it in the mean time... or that the bike doesn't get stolen. Either way it out of my hands...now on to the next project.

Boo hiss. The avoidance of toe clip overlap at the expense of handling is one of my major pet peeves - that includes larger sizes, though it's common in smaller ones. My favorite-handling bike has plenty of toe clip overlap, and all it calls for is a little extra awareness at stop lights/signs.
