Training & Nutrition - Inexpensive Trainers?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Sorry if I'm missing the READ HERE posting, but I'm just going to wing it
I live in a place with some bad winds, bad drivers and 10 miles from good open road ways. Today I got a good 70 mile ride in and it took me 35 miles to get a good feel since I've been on my butt for 2 weeks straight shut in from the 20-30 mph winds.
I'm hoping that I can buy a good trainer, fluid hopefully, that's inexpensive and will give me some good training.
Also I need help with training tyre choices. I run 700c x 25c with my road bike.
Here's my stats:
$200 is what I would like to spend, lower would be great
700c wheels
Apartment, upstairs but no one lives down below
I would use a towel under the trainer
Risers I would find
Quick release hubs
PS. I'm not doing rollers
Thanks in advance

Hehehehe.... I don't like rollers either. Too much time trying to figure out how to stay balanced, and too many bruises on my butt bone getting to that point! I feels ya, homey!
Anyway, why not check craigslist and put an ad out? Most people don't use trainers in the summer, so you might catch a good deal.

I look on CL for trainers but never thought of posting ad for one, that's a good idea thanks.
Any body with some answers to my original question?

Also, since trainers are a wintertime thing, you might want to check those bike retail websites like bike nashbar, performance, supergo, etc. They may have it in their clearance section.

I've checked already. Nothing.
Do you use a trainer, if so would a wind trainer be that bad?

I've got a CycleOps trainer. If a wind trainer is anything like the old ones I've seen, they might be a bit loud.

Well people say they are loud and some say that they are just fine. What would be considered loud? Dog bark? Clapping hands loud? or a person humming loud?

If you can hear it at all, that's loud to me. Mine hums at a low volume, but when you factor in that I live in a condo means it could be disturbing for the neighbors below.

Do you have a fluid or magnetic?
Sorry about the Q&A most people here are a**holes sometimes.

I use a Cycleops Magnetic Trainer that was purchased on the cheap from some online store. I just did a search and found that some sites are selling them for about $60. I paid $16 for the riser and was using a telephone book because it serves the same purpose.

I think Nashbar had the Blackburn Techfluid on sale for just under $200. I have one and think it's a POS, but you may feel different.
My gripe is that it takes 10-12 minutes for it to settle out- variable resistance and 4-6 minutes of vibration during the first 10-12 minutes. I tried 3 different units and this last one is the least objectionable.
Once it settles in it works pretty well and is fairly quiet. The only real redeeming value I can see in it is that you don't need a riser block.
