Mountain - Plains - Denver Century - Lookout bypass

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I'm doing the Denver Century next week but need to skip the big hill climb due to a bum knee. Any suggestions on the best way to cut through Golden and get back on the route south of town?

I would take the bike path that runs along the 6th Ave freeway at 19th. Take CO Rd 93 down to 40 and connect up with the route.
However, there is some fairly steep climbing on the path and just about everywhere in Golden for that matter.

Here's the route (http://ridewithgps.com/routes/453892) that DataJunkie suggests. Most of the ride is on bike path and good streets. US40 is rideable but isn't the most bike friendly. Going up to I-70 is steep and slow without much shoulder. Just be careful.
Thanks. Ya, I know I'm not going to be able to avoid all climbing, unfortunately. I know if I do Lookout I'll definitely not be able to finish and it will take me a few weeks to recover. I want a new knee!
