After a couple rides this year I have noticed that with the slightest uphill, my thighs start burning. It is odd, as I have strong legs and play soccer. They shouldn't be burning as quick as they do.
I noticed that moving my seat up a bit helped some, but further adjustments did little.
My setup: pretty much a s stock 2008 Rockhopper Pro Disc, with Shimano M540 SPD clipless pedals.
Any adjustment ideas? Are my pedals/cleats not setup properly? What adjust can be made? Or do I just need to ride more uphill and train my legs to deal with it.
Soccer works different muscles as well as working the same muscles in a different way. If you push through it, does the burn go away like your burning off lactic?
I'd say that if you're doing XC, raise your saddle high enough to give your leg a "slight" bend when it's at the end of pedal stroke. This will increase efficiency. If you're riding technical terrain...grit your teeth and bear it. Lower saddle helps for techy stuff.

^What Ed said. It's just muscle confusion--your muscles have likely grown used to the ways they're used in soccer, but not with biking. It'll pass.

Its probably like the above posters stated that your just working different muscle groups. But personally ive noticed that my diet IE what i eat the night before and the morning of a ride will have huge effect on when my legs start burning and my ability to push through it.
