Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

From recent threads:
Where I live . . .
It rains a lot here . . .
You wouldn't believe the number of potholes around here . . .
Hey, if you go to
"Settings"
"Edit profile"
then scroll down to "Location"
And enter something about your location such as the city or even the state where you live, this will show up under your Avatar, helping us all to know where "Here" or "Where I live" actually is, so we don't have to guess.
And, words like "Nirvana," "Where the mountains meet the sea," "East of Eden," or "This small universe" while they may be true - don't really help!!
Check out under my Avatar to the left.
Thanks so much.

Yes, but there are about 38 million folks in CA, 5 million in CO, and even 40,000 in Parker, CO. I don't think that saying I live in Parker, CO, is much of an identifying factor. Besides, I am all over the internet - with web pages, letters, blogs, etc., etc. But, of course, it is the individual's choice. I have personally given up all pretense of privacy in our current world.
Where I live, Nirvana, where the mountains meet the sea, just East of Eden, in this small universe , we don't share that kind of information. If any of you Mericans know where I live, then I give you a pat on the head. :)

You state you live in "Upper Canada" - That's good enough for me and provides a good reference point.
I would understand if many folks in the US conclude that Upper Canada is somewhere up in the Arctic, whereas in fact it's a historical entity that now comprises mostly southern Ontario. Which is why I didn't need to travel to Tuktoyaktuk to have my colonoscopy done at the Upper Canada Lower Bowel Clinic.

And if your in the area get in touch and we'll go for a ride.

Security? No credit card, SSN, driver's license, or any other pertinent numbers will ever be posted here. *Poof*! You've seen my picture, BUT...is that really me?? *Poof* again!
I don't worry about the small stuff. I'm a social creature, and I don't mind people knowing *about* where I live and ride.

Good thread. "Jim from Boston"...d'uh, that's Boston Massachusetts.
I actually chose my screen name not so much for location, but because I'm a radio talk show fan and when I (rarely) call in, I'm introduced as Jim from Boston ("...and now here's Jim from Boston; what's up, Jim?"). Conversely, when I call or post my favorite station I add the appellation "Your Number One Fan among Boston's Bicycle Commuters" in particular to tweak a curmudgeonly anti-bicyclist host.
A local BF subscriber once called me "James de Boston"; wished I had thought of that.

Funny you should mention that. Back in 1977, our car broke down in that town and the garage owner put us up for the night. I looked up the location on Mapquest to confirm my memory. That was long before I-275 was built. Are you in Traverse City?

About 15 miles from a 13,000 acre wildfire in one direction but the wind is keeping most of the smoke away, most of the people have their animals and possessions evacuated and humidity is rising. Thunderstorms forecast so we can expectt more soon.
Why privacY? Back in the newpapaer days burglars used to watch vacation and funeral notices for clues on where to rob. Similar now with internet. When a person posts on the internet the only difference between that and taking out an ad in the newspaper or putting a notice on the supermarket bulletin board is that someone will read it. Amazing how many people who have had adverse events from property crimes, to medical treatment problems, to social conflict to job denial due to internet posts; many of which were mistinterpreted.

I can go to any county internet site and get your address and name as owner of your property. I can drive down your street and get your address. I can look in the phone book and - most likely - there you are. I can do a paid internet search and find out all about you. Every MD's office you have ever been to has you SSN, along with all the clerks in that office, their friends and family and even maybe their crooks.. I can get your IP address right off of your posting - there used to be someone on BFN who would display your IP address, and did, right at the bottom of the screen. You are kidding yourself if you think you are a private person.

Didn't mean to say all data is private. But, important data is. Where am I? Don't know my IP address today but the provider I use showed it as Boston, MA yesterday, thanks to fibre optics and their server system. Am I home? Posting about a trip to Granny's lets the public know where I am. Of course I live in a small community in a state with few firearms laws so the odds are against the bad guy; still. Certainly, people with whom I have a business relationship have all,and probably, more data than they need. But, that is unlike the general public where I have very little of no legal sanctions for improper use., or theft.
Thisi is one of the big philisophical debates now. Some say and are teaching that no one has an inherent right to privacy of any nature. Others are quite the opposite. For now I think anyone has to assume the government, or governments, have pretty complete dossiers, on each person. Even if there are supposed legal restridtions on the government(s) gathering the data there are not generally on their purchasing the information. In my personal case I do what is reasonable to protect myself from the general public. But, from governments? That is a losing cause and is at the heart of Blackberrry's difficulties with several governements.
So, guess it depends on how "privacy" is defined.

I live in a town with a population of 1,900. You could come here and ask "Where does the tall, middle-aged, blonde who rides a road bike live?" Anybody here could walk you over to my house.

If you lived in southern Utah and said you lived in Dixie, now that would be confusing.

I love small towns. Our town is about 3600 and has 3 bike shops. It's a bicycle mecca of sorts.
People don't say "hello" to me. They ask "Did you ride today?"

I havent brought myself to the point of getting on a stationary bike in the winter. But it sure is a drag getting back into shape in March not knowing if you'll have snow until late April.
Spent a couple summers out there back in the late '70s and what you folks say about "thinning of the blood" sure seems true enough. That next winter I was wearing a warm coat.

Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio here. Great nearby rides in and around the Cuyahoga Valley National Park.
I'm in Eugene, OR, located 100 mile south of Portland and home to the University of Oregon. Yeah, it rains, but mostly in the winter, summers are quite dry and perfect for cycling because the temperatures are mild. I always say that I've lived all over the country and that this is the nicest climate of anywhere. No extremes of temperature, no thunder storms, and enough rain to make for beautiful and green forests and farmland. I'll take the rain in winter any day, it's totally worth the benefits.
This photo is looking west from Eugene to the coast range mountains (fantastic cycling) to the Pacific Ocean, about 50 miles from Eugene to the beach.
