Just went there to find a stray left side crank arm, and whoa! The prices are through the roof?? This makes me re-think the value of my Fuji Ace for sure. Is it really that hard to find?,,,,BD

Plus $22 Austrian shipping.
I think this is more then I can get for a complete bike with these on them. Well maybe more then 50% of what I could get for a complete bike.

The levers with decent hoods seem to command some steep prices or at least they did when I was looking. The prices on the cranksets are all over the place, I've seen them go cheap and really, really high.
Yes, your Ace certainly isn't worth what you paid for it. :D

Jeezum. You'd think that stuff had "Campagnolo" stamped on it. Things are getting out of hand. But, it has always been thus, I suppose.

FWIW, there's also THIS. (http://cgi.ebay.com/TOP-VINTAGE-SHIMANO-DURA-ACE-GROUP-VGC-NOS-PARTS-/330571937223?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4cf79f75c7)
And though not DA, THIS (http://cgi.ebay.com/Shimano-600-7-speed-road-bike-parts-group-build-kit-/260796649092?pt=Cycling_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3cb8b10e84) is a nice alternative if you are interested in fairly complete 600 group (with wheels).

Like others said, asking price is much different than *sold* price.
I just finished piecing together an early DA bike, mostly in black. Took a while but wasn't ridiculously expensive....(I mean, maybe because I took so long waiting for bargains). Campy NR stuff in pretty beat shape can sell for just as much, but if you want Shimano, you want Shimano :)

Try to find a set of 175 mm first generation Dura-Ace cranks... can you think C Record?
I bought a set of brakes and levers for about $25 a month ago. You can find deals on the stuff if you are patient.
If you are willing to wait you can get some amazing deals. I got a set of 600 Ultegra wheels with Araya rims for $10 because the seller misspelled "Araya" as "Alaya". The trick is not to search for things, but rather to patiently comb through the category listings until a good deal shows up.

I did a bit of referencing on ebay through the completed items using vintage dura ace. Interesting. Of note a NOS set of EX freehub, cassette front in the box went for just under $140. I bought mine on the 'bay a few years ago for much less, as with many other parts. SOme is the luck of the time, much more variation than with vintage Campagnolo from this quick look. but prices are trending up. And might climb faster, as there was less Dura Ace out there in the 70's and very early 80's.

The first gen DA is great stuff. You can save a little money by using a Crane rear derailleur in black.

After having finished a Nuovo Gran Sport bicycle recently, I decided it would be my last. Another frame I planned N-GS for initially will get black ano Dura-Ace instead.

I would like to see something about early Dura-Ace headsets clearified. This is the variation that is most often encountered >>>
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3603/3621421409_582fb47d39_z.jpg
It is the chromed model of which I untill not long ago thought it would be the 1st issue of the Dura-Ace headset. Also VeloBase lists it as 1st gen. However I now already have two identical steel headsets with Dura-Ace lock nuts, one in black, one is silver. They do not have the high gloss chromed finish. I would think they predate the above shown chromed example. Does anyone have more information on this?
The black example was fitted in Gazelle Champion Mondial AA with all black Dura-Ace including Crane mech. The silver one sat fitted in an early 70s RIH.

Mel, I restored this Puch last year. It had first generation Cyclone mechs, Mighty Tour crankset, Weinmann Carrera calipers, a Dura Ace headset and cable guides. Everything looked to be original to the bike. I believe the owner more or less chose parts and had the LBS switch many out.

That is the almost the first version of the Dura=Ace head set. the upper cup is a bit less chamfered than the lower. The early ones had the same chamfer top and bottom, and were heavy, also available in Black chrome. The more rounded one is what came with the EX edition, just before the EX they were chromed steel then the alloy with the concave nut faces. Later 600 units were alloy with wrench flats, they gave up on the concave. One problem with the Dura Ace headset was it had a bigger stack height that the Campagnolo, not good for conquest sales.

Okay, thanks. I am trying to understand. We have 3 variations now shown in this topic(in case steel):
1 - the headset in the babyblue RIH (I do have this variation also in black)
2 - the headset fitted in Colonel's Puch
3 - the headset in the green bike
2 and 3 differ in that Colonel's lower cup is slightly different than that of the green bike. The headset in the green bike counts as Dura-Ace EX specific (introduced in 1978)? Or was it initially also carried within the EX line? I would think the later, as the green (all original) Zebrakenko has Crane mech fitted and the brakes are also pre EX I think.
Colonel's headset (2) is earlier than 3?
1 is earlier than both 2 and 3?
1 is early, but there was an earlier one (not pictured here) with different chamfer for top and lower cup?
As soon as all clear I will add the variation in the RIH to VeloBase.

Yes, there is an earlier version than on the Blue RIH. Top cup matches the shape of the lower. Best chance to see one is on a Teledyne Titan frame, they were fitted with Dura-Ace headsets, ovrsized top tube cable clips and Shimano seat binder bolts.

My previous posting was for a item that was marked sold. This (http://boston.craigslist.org/gbs/bik/2430319578.html) is most likely not going to be sold. But
still this more then I can get for a bike in good condition with these cranks on it. Asking price $300.

Okay. I am sorry, I am a bit confused. Checked and rechecked the headset in my RIH. I understand the earliest had same chamfer, the 2nd earliest different. With my eyes I am not able to detect any difference in chamfer between lower and higher cup (...or am I looking at the wrong thing?). I have the black chrome Dura-Ace headset here too now. It is identical to the headset in the babyblue RIH.
I sought for a pic of the earliest DA headset in a Teledyne frame. On Classic Rendezvous I found this picture showing a Teledyne frame with a DA headset, but this headset looks identical to that one in the RIH.
