Hey guys,

The new diet is going great. I've basically cut out all junk food and reduced my portions, eating more veggies, yada yada yada..

Anyway, I was out yesterday and I thought, hey, why not try a sprite zero? No calories, ect..

As soon as I drank it I felt bloated. This morning I still feel bloated, and it would appear that I'm retaining about a pound of extra water weight.

Is this normal? Maybe this is a good lesson learned. Of course, it could have been anything I've eaten throughout the day, but my meals have been the same for about two weeks and I haven't been bloated like this before.

Thanks!

It is gas that is bloating you. Stick to one of the safest drinks in the world...water and you will have no problems.

It can supposedly cause bloat. Neither diet soda or regular soda are good for you. In the rare event that I am going to drink a soda I may as well drink the real thing (something with sugar. Not fake sweeteners or hfcs).

Well, during my ride this morning I feel like I wasn't as thirsty when I usually would have been on the same route. I did drink plenty especially at the end, but I suppose after sweating it out I feel great again. No bloated feeling and everything is good. Lesson learned for me I suppose! :)

Didn't they purify water in the middle ages by turning it into beer... :innocent:

Sprite Zero is made with 75 mg of aspartame and 50 mg of acesulfame potassium. The only other thing I could think of that may be bad would be the sodium. I haven't looked it up, but generally, Zero calorie diet drinks are high in sodium. I don't really understand why sodium is all that bad for you other than it affects blood pressure and can make you retain water... which, hopefully, if we're doing our due diligence, we'll sweat out, right? :

Haven't experienced this myself and have been drinking diet soda for years. Guess it depends on the person.

There's not any legitimate study that links those sweeteners to any illness or else the FDA would have pulled them a long time ago. They've been studying this stuff for decades. Sugar, however, whether cane or HFCS, will for certain cause diabetes and other problems if you drink a lot of soda.
