Commuting - Sudden-onset illness

So what's your plan if you get so sick during the workday that you can't ride home? This happened to me Tuesday. Not sure what caused it, but I was feeling a bit off most of the morning, and by lunchtime I suddenly had to grab waste basket to upchuck in.

Fortunately my new cubemate has a Chevy Suburban and agreed to drive me and the bike home. I was out sick on Wednesday and well, today, it seemed prudent to drive since I'm still not 100%.

I was fortunate; I just kind of made it up as I went along and it was dumb luck that my cubie has a big vehicle.

Do y'all have a Plan B to cover those cases when you can't ride home?

I'd call the wife or grab a ride from a coworker. Worst case I have lightrail nearby. If I have to I can leave my bike here since i store it in my cube.

I had notional ideas of what I would do and it kind of worked out, but when you're puking and trying to figure it out... not much fun.

worst case, i can always leave the bike at work and take the train home, but i'd have to be really, really freaking sick to not ride home. i've never had a sickness hit me that hard that quickly, and if one did, i'd probably be headed over to my doctor's office or the ER.

I can take the mass transit, either leave the bike at work or walk it and take it on the subway and then just ride under 10 min from the subway station. Having coworkers with cars seems like a goo idea though if mass transit is not an option :)

So far, it hasn't happened. I was feeling sick few times, not as bad though, and the ride home was slow and lousy but I made.

Most days, my wife would be able to come pick me up and bring a bike rack along. I would personally avoid mass transit unless there was no other option...upchucking in an enclosed public space is not something I want to experience, just for the public humiliation aspect of it.

lucky me have not had that problem in the 3 years I've been commuting however.... our company has a guaranteed ride home program. sponsored by company and a regional group here in Atlanta. https://www.myridesmart.com/html/grh.htm so far have never needed it but it is my backup. oh and wife can also pick me up after school hours.

Really? It was just a virus or something and cleared up after a day and a half.

I'm thinking I could find a ride at work. The one time I was fixing a flat in the parking lot right after work I had three people offering me a ride home.

I keep some basic overnight gear at my office for the rare nights when I can't get home; I'm lucky to work on a university campus where it isn't a problem to do that. Usually I sleep in the office if there's been a sudden snowstorm, or a late work assignment that makes it simply easier to stay there for the night. ( I can ride in the snow, but am not about to submit myself to the nonexistent snow driving skills of many Seattlelites on the arterials I have to ride.) Also have mass transit as a backup, and there are friends who live near my office who have offered me a couch for the night if I need it.

I didn't start off commuting to and from work, it started with having a bike at the office to ride to meetings during the day that seemed silly to drive to as they were only a couple of miles. Since I started commuting, the car stays at the office and is there in case there's a meeting in the Valley or on the Westside (Los Angeles) and it's a hot day or time is short. Or I get sick. Or it rains.

what i meant is that i'd have to be really, REALLY, REALLY freaking sick for me to not ride home from work. if i were to get that sick that fast, i would go get it checked out, but it's never happened to me before.

Plan A: Coworker live in same town as I do. He has pickup truck. Simple load and go.

Plan B: Get rid to train station. Get off in couple of stop where my mom lives which is close to my work. Have her make some Chicken soup for me :)
