Winter Cycling - ski goggles

it occurred to me this morning that ski goggles would be a particularly good idea for winter commuting and rides. any one else do this? i'm sick of squinting when the wind really picks up. prolly wear them over a balaclava.

the main problem with them is they totally kill your peripheral vision, making shoulder checks a pain in the neck.

When it gets really cold, I go with ski goggles, and a balaclava. It has to be well below freezing, but it's a great set-up, and works well for me. When done correctly, only your nose is exposed. When that gets to be to much, you can always pull the balaclava up over your nose for short periods. Try it, you'll like it! :)

thanks, i think i will. last winter i had a massive coat with a hood that i wore over my helmet & scarf. so this setup might even buy me a little more peripheral vision - sweet.

I see a local lunatic bicycling quite regularly with a motorcycle helmet and ski goggles... so yes, it has been done.

There isn't enough room between my helmet and my nose for ski goggles and nowhere for the strap to go. I wear the helmet low on my forehead to protect the frontal lobes. No offense BAC, but your helmet is way back on your head, not the way it is designed to be worn. I'll admit also having difficulty finding goggles that worked ok with my ski helmet which is designed for use with goggles! So maybe my big nose makes it harder to get goggles to fit. Try them on with the helmet before purchasing to make sure they will fit.

Oakley makes some ski goggles with a wide periphial vision range. They have interchangable lenses which is good cause if your a mountain biker they will scratch. Also good for different lighting. I think they were only like $35 direct from Oakley... I dont have them but plan on getting some eventually.

If you have problems with fogging there are anti-fog sprays you can use. I used to play paintball and the spray I used worked very well on my goggles. I hear double pane ski goggles dont really fog at all.

Correct. Double paned ski goggles do not fog. I ski on the coast.

Has anyone tried racquetball glasses? That's what I use. They cover a lot of the face (like ski goggles) and are a kind of "wrap around" style, so they have great peripheral vision. Also, they don't interfere with my helmet. Finally, they used to never fog up until I gave into temptation one day and wiped them with my gloves. I think if you always use a soft cloth (i.e. for glasses or camera lenses), they shouldn't fog. I can't guarantee it, but I never had a problem w/ fog until I wiped them. I got mine at some chain sporting place for 20 bucks.

If clear lenses are fine then Oakleys for $30 sound like a good idea to me as well.
