Bicycle Mechanics - To face or not to face.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I’m going to install a new threadless headset on a ti frame that is unpainted. Is it essential to face the headtube prior to pressing in the new headset? I would assume that if there is no corrosion or paint on the surface facing would not be required. Am I correct in that assumption? The frame is about six years old and in very good shape. I have a headset press but no facing tool and would like to remove and install the headset myself.
Thanks in advance

Over the years, I've never faced any part of any of my frames, new and old, steel, ti, whatever, prior to building..... & never had a problem.

Thanks in advanceNever done it with any frame and no issues.Ti frames are typically prepped anyway.
It all depends on the individual frame. Most top end frames have already been faced. Given that you have a titanium frame, it is unlikely that it will be required. However, have a good look at the old headset. If the wear is obviously uneven, then you should have faced.
