Classic & Vintage - Upgrade time.... Cilo...

Okay...I have talked about doing this for years now, but I intend to do it now.

198? Cilo - Columbus SLX
6 speed, Suntour Cyclone FD/RD, Campy DT shifters Sugino Aero Mighty double crankset.

If it's a 6 speed, would the easiest upgrade be some older 7 speed RSX or some 600/Ultegra 7 speed brifters? IIRC I can use the 6 speed rear with the 7 speed brifters, yes?

Random question, but what are those hoods? They look like they might fit my brake-levers, and I've been looking for pink!

6 speed means it is likely 126 spacing. 8,9,10 speed drivetrains are spaced at 130. You can get it cold set at any decent LBS, you could try it yourself (not hard), or just force a 130mm wheel in there no problem. It will fit tight, but won't hurt anything. So you are only limited by how much you want to change, and your wallet. The cheapest quickest upgrade would be to put a 7 speed freewheel on your current setup. It would be a little bit of an upgrade but not much.

IMO, upgrading to 8 speed STI/Ergos would probably be your best bang-for-buck. 8 speed stuff is loads cheaper, easy to find and offers a big noticeable upgrade over the 6 you have. You would need new wheels (technically just a new rear hub...), shifters, and rear derailler.

What brakes are those? You could get a huge upgrade by going to some dual pivots. 8 speed era brakes are also great deals now and look great.

It's my wife's bike, and she really wants brifters. I'd like to do it without dropping a ton of coin. 7 speed freewheel and some older 7 speed brifters might work okay. Would the current RD work with a 7 speed freewheel/brifters?

OK, I get it. Yes, it will work. You can get a 7 speed SIS compatible free wheel and 7-STIs. I have that combination with Sora shifters and it works like a charm. You will need to pick up a 105, 600, or Ultegra RD, which should cost you $15-30. Someone here should be able to set you up on some of the parts.

You should be able to ell some of your bits to re-coup some of the cost. Those shifters and rear der should bring in some $$.

1-swap freewheel to 7-sp. No change in rear width, pick up 1 speed and STI compatibility. Get an indexing freewheel.
2-7sp STI's or the cheaper and generally more available 8sp STI's.
3-DT cable stops and some STI housing would be needed.
4-Generally the FD will rub a bit due to differences in cable pull, but you can "move" the rub to where it's least used.
5-If you're staying with 7-sp, you may be able to use the same RD, and I'd certainly try it.

Note: if you go with 8sp STI shifters on the 7sp setup, the 8th speed will just be along for the ride and do nothing.

The only thing is that I'd like to hold onto all of the original bits if I decide to return it to original condition in the future :)
