Let me start this fourm off by saying I'am 14. Eariler on today my dad let me try riding his old swchinn mountain bike. He use to be semi-professinal and won lots of local races, and he is not the most aceppting person ethier. After 2 knee surgerys and some other issuses, in his knees his doctor said its going to be a while before he is back on his bike; the knee issues were not because of his major bike riding. This bike is also his prized possesion which he spent over 2500 dollars on around 20 years ago. Anyway I am taking after him, exept with road cycling, and I have no idea how to fix this, road bikes are diffrent:) As I rode the bike down the road I tried to shift the left shifter and, eariler on he said it shifts hard so I pushed and heard a snap! and now its unshiftable. Scence I dont, or have I ever owned a mountain bike I am cluless on how to fix it. How much would my lbs charge for parts and labor to fix it? PLEASE HELP!

A little information would be helpful. What type of shifters? What brand? Trim level? You may also want to cross-post all of that in th mechanics forum. They tend to know a lot more about all things fix-it.
