Edited to say I have not seen this confirmed.

Word is the cause of the crash that killed the 67 year old cyclist while descending into Minturn was his riding jacket got into his rear spokes. He had it wrapped around his waist and it came loose. The jacket locked up his rear wheel and he was thrown off the bike and sustained a head injury.

I have not seen this confirmed as the cause.

At the recent Ruby event a person reached down to get a twig or something out of the spokes while riding and I believe it did something similar. The person came home with a broken hand and abrasions. It could have been much worse. In any event, any fatality like this is very tragic. You just hate to hear of these things happening.

I often see "Casual" riders on the MUPs round here with the top coat/jersey round the waist with parts of it getting close to the rear wheel. Makes you wonder how they have survived so long. But one of the things I used to do on the Long enduros was to make certain that any clothing discarded was put inside the top bag of the pannier and not just in the mesh cover. It is just commonsense to me. I often saw other riders with a jacket in the Mesh of their back pack and a sleeve or some of the jacket dangling out.

jppe, So sad if such a simple act may've caused his death. I confess to wrapping my jacket around my waist once it warms and have never given it another thought.

On a 600k a while back, I had an outer jersey bungee corded onto the top of my trunk bag. I had other riders tell me, beware, it was about to get entangled, but for the life of me, I couldn't get it bungeed where something wasn't hanging down. I eventually moved to on top of the handlebar bag and that fixed it.

I have seaarched Google pretty well and can not yet find a cause of death or description of the accident other than an unwitnessed fall resulting in head and chest injuries. One would think that if there was a jacket/spoke interaction, it would be mentioned somewhere in the coroner's or police report. Perhaps later?
