Tandem Cycling - 50T chainring for mountain crankset?

Hello Everybody, We are a couple of 6 month old tandem riders from Barcelona, Spain. This is our very first post on this forum, which we like a lot. Here is the question:

Our tandem, a Lapierre "hybrid" (rigid frame and fork, kojak tires) has a four legs mountain crank set, with 26-36-48 chainrings. We would like to try a 50T big ring, but we cannot find it anywhere. Does this exists? or should we go for a road triple crankset as the only way to use a 50T?

Ifr you cannot find a 50T chainring then why don't you get a cassette/freewheel with an 11 or 12 tooth small cog?

TA Specialites make a 50 tooth chainring with 104 BCD in their Chinook range. An online supplier based in Germany is Starbike, who offer two versions, one with wider "branches" than the other, see here (http://www.starbike.com/php/product_info.php?lang=en&pid=3205) and here (http://www.starbike.com/php/product_info.php?lang=en&pid=3190). However, your local bike shop can probably also get hold of such an item for you if they have a supplier who deals in TA parts.

Hola Mr. Salvador! OT - I am heading to Barcelona in September with my girlfriend for 13 days riding throughout Catalunya and s. France (single road bikes, not tandem). May I contact you about routes, recommendations, etc? We prefer to travel lightly on day trips. I have several loops identified, but of course your knowledge would be most appreciated. We plan on working our way north into the Pyrenees before returning to Barcelona and home. Appreciate your thoughts!

Thank you, I wasn't able to get it by myself. We have a 11-32 cassette, which give us a superwide range of gears: some jumps are too much but we use our tandem also fully loaded with luggage and that 32 help us a lot.
After a hill climb I like to spin softly, not to speed up, but to keep legs warm. That's basically why we would like to try a 50T (before going road triple).

Hi chris, give more information:
are you travelling with "everything" I mean, with a trailer or panniers? Will you sleep at campings or hotels? How much milleage (translate to km please) are you planning, and your fitness level...
2 years ago we traveled south france pre-perynees, we didn't dare to climb those tour.de.france mountains, but we were near. Will you travel with a gps unit? have you traced the path in google earth or wikiloc or something?
