Foo - Lawn Striping? Is This for Real?!

I have never heard of lawn striping outside of sports stadiums. When I was looking for something on YouTube, I came across lawn striping videos. There are even entire systems you can buy to get the effect. (It would be cheaper to just have your two-year-old roll across the lawn in different directions, but whatever.)

Anyway, I have never seen or heard of this before for your own lawn. Do people actually do this? Is it a regional thing? It this the next level of being an armchair referee? (I understand how it works, so that isn't my question.)

I ask because I find it looks absolutely hideous! It looks so ridiculous, yet there are people who obviously take pride in their lawn striping. Please explain it to me!

I like it. It would be a wonderful civil disobedience against any hoa.

Back when I cut grass in high school we would occasionally do two passes at slants to each other because it made the grass more even. I always figured that the diamond pattern was a side effect, not the end goal.

You're supposed to alternate the cutting direction from time to time anyway. I think it looks kindof cool.

Right, but this is different. This is putting a weighted roller behind your lawn mower to bend the grass in different directions so the light reflects the naturally different colors on opposite sides of some grasses.

To each their own, but for some reason this particular thing struck me as extremely odd, as I haven't seen it in person for myself, ever.

This only works for some grasses. I used to mow my grandparents' yard very carefully to get a nice striped effect. Just for kicks. I also used to abuse my grandparents central vacuum system and vacuum the thick pile carpet in their living room to match the yard. I have pictures of perfectly striped white carpet somewhere. :)

I dislike mowing as it is... why the heck would I spend extra time to attach extra stuff to the machine that I wrestle around in the first place. And then spend extra time making "art" out of my lawn?? That's time I could be on my bike!

Sure I get it. They've just taken it a bit further. I think it looks cool but wouldn't go to the trouble to do it myself as I hate cutting the grass as it is.

Wow, it's crop circles for dreadfully boring people.

No kidding. The least you could do is make it spell out a word or make a picture of whatever jsharr is doing on vacation with it.

I thought you meant painting white lines on it, jeeze.

And my lawn has that pattern, but at an angle. It's out of habit because when I first laid the sod, I was told not to go with the pattern of the way it was laid, that diagonal would be better for it until it's really set.

I, uh, stripe the lawn, and the top terrace has a nice herring bone pattern in it at the moment.
Pull behind reel mower. Reel mowers stripe grass by the way they cut.

When I lived in the Coachella Valley the rage was putting diamond-like patterns on your lawn just like golf courses. But then again Coachella Valley is insane for golf and they have a lot of people who know how to mow that way.

Me, I hacked what grass there was in my yard with a weed wacker. My yard was much more desert appropriate. My house was the the only one to have any snails in the yard. But the roadrunners who lived on my roof loved them, so there was a beautiful balance.

I think its more of a masters touch detail than something you should strive for. If you have to buy a machine to do it for you it almost defeats the purpose of the look. Might as well spray paint flowers in your garden to show how much of a master gardener you are. But whatever gets your juices juicing.

Heck my grandfather had a white driveway and a white roof; not white with the occasional spots either, white. Everyone has their own vanity item.
