Foo - Pro Cycling Versus NHL Hockey

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

How fitting that the two sports that nobody could give a fark about in the US are back to back on the same pathetic cable channel.
Hey, at least it's High Def Utter Fail.
September 9, 10 and 11. Cubs vs. Mets on WGN. Enjoy and you're welcome.

In my opinion the two best sports on the planet.Hockey is a sport of real athletes, unlike baseball and football which is full of Fatso's . I would be amazed if most fat MLB pitchers can run over 2 miles

Most fat MLB pitchers could afford to pay the fastest milers in the world to run the 2 miles for them.

I thought people only went to hockey games to see the fights. Just like some watch the Tour De France for the freak show performance put on by the fans.

WTF?? Pcad...sorry man but you are way off base. Football lockout? players do not want to play 18 games?? they do know that hockey players play 82, right? often times 3-4 games in a week with travel etc.....the football pansy league wants to take out the high hits etc etc....
In my opinion, you are getting paid 7 million a year to go across the middle, catch the ball and get hit so hard your helmet comes off. If you do not want to do that, then find something else to do for a living, because there are 40 guys lined up behind you that will do it for less money.
Don't forget all that bull riding.

I can't really imagine that football is as physically demanding as hockey either.
Hockey is awesome, it's nonstop like soccer but faster, and stuff happens. No stopping to catch your breath after each play or fouling to stop the clock like nfl/nba. Action action action.
Oh; and the best part:

Personally I love watching hockey and cycling on Versus. So if everybody else in the U.S. watches less, that just means that there's more left over for me right? My piece of the pie gets bigger! Yes, it must.

I play hockey in the winter and a lot of guys on my team cycle in the Spring / Summer. I just started cycling and quickly becoming addicted. So yes, my 2 favorite sports now are hockey and cycling...and I watch it every chance I get...but I'm also in Canada so coverage is limited for cycling :(
Being that I travel all over the US fairly regularly, I can only suggest there are no fans of pro cycling or the NHL in the vicinity of Mt. Doom.
There are fans of both all over, just not enough to compete economically with re-runs of Will and Grace or Two and a Half Men.

I don't doubt this in the slightest. When you get 30 million people living together in a semi-permafrost wasteland, what do you expect them to do to entertain themselves? Hockey was the answer for Canada. :D

See, this is the problem with Canada. Left wing mamby pamby whack jobs that lie down and let anybody walk all over them. Gee, Go Canucks Go.. but if you don't, a half ass effort is appreciated too. Winning isn't what we are here for. We are just all friends anyways. We need each other.. Group hug! Koombaya....
F that crap! Learn to fight, don't rely on others and in the immortal words of my grandfather " If theres a lot, take a lot. If theres a little, TAKE IT ALL!"
The fuggin Yanks think they are the world power. That is gone. They need power, but in a different form and guess what? We have it. We have the second largest oil reserve in the world. We have twice as much available (at a higher cost) than is cuurently listed as available. Even the Saudis are nervous about this one. We have huge diamond fields. We have the largest softwood supply, the largest hydro electric supply and largest fresh water supply. Look around any major US city at the increased number of Canadian banks, TD, RBC, BMO, Scotiabank. Who is buying who?
Supply and demand old boy and the US is reliant on our goodwill a lot more than we are reliant on their desire or ability to buy.
All facts, as painful as it is to admit.
That said, I have more friends in the US than in Canada. They have a much better grasp on their situation than online personalities let on. Deep down, I love what America was but am concerned for the future. The people are wonderful and of course they are welcome here. Spry and I like to swap shots. Just like hockey players do. :thumb:

Actually, as much as I hate to admit this, we're much more dependent on the USA than they are with us.
Yes, we have a lot of oil. But, the USA has the earth's largest energy resources.
http://www.energytribune.com/articles.cfm/6933/US-Has-Earths-Largest-Energy-Resources
Having them buy our oil cheaply and depleting our own resources isn't something to gloat about.
Freshwater? Our supply of fresh water is less than 6 percent of the world's renewable supply.
http://www.polarisinstitute.org/abundance_of_freshwater_a_myth
Again, nothing to gloat over.
Electricity? The USA buys a little over 1 percent of electricity from us. That's not even enough to power one US state.
http://www.eia.gov/emeu/northamerica/enginfr3.htm
Again, nothing to gloat over.
Just having natural resources doesn't mean a whole lot, you need buyers too, and the yanks fill that need for us adequately:
"Four cents out of every 10 cents of Canadian wealth is created from trade in the United States..."
http://www.theguardian.pe.ca/Living/Travel/2008-05-06/article-1293205/McKenna%3A-Canadians-should-be-less-judgmental-of-United-States/1
Our trade is completely lopsided too. 85% of Canada's exports go to the USA and 76% of Canada's imports are from the USA. Exports amount to 45% of Canada's GDP.
Conversely, 20% of USA exports go to Canada, while 16% of USA imports come from Canada. Exports only make up 12% of the USA GDP.
Our trading infrastructure is geared toward short distance commerce too. Like across the border with trucks, rail and short-range ships. Yes, we could diversify our clientele (and should), but it would take years to build up our industry to trade at a global level. If the USA stopped its trade with us, we wouldn't be able to fill the vacuum quickly.
Here in Canada, we also have a branch plant economy thanks to the Americans. These USA companies grant employment to many of our citizens.
Not only do they bring their own companies across the border, like ExxonMobil and Ford, but they buy out our existing companies (like the Hudson's Bay Company) and make money off of us that way.
Once upon a time, I used to be bigoted toward the Americans. Anti-Americanism is alive and well in Canada, but it doesn't exist in me anymore. I'm happy to have the Americans as our friends. It's been a good, and lucrative, relationship. Why upset that? :thumb:
Not to mention that Canada is our main supplier of toilet paper. They could really cause a mess if they cut us off.
Let's just say that with our military we'll protect Canada's back and they can help our backside.

A 9% trade differential is not totally out of line. Your reference to 45% GDP being from export includes ALL export.
Branch plant economy is not a good thing when tax advantages are utilized (ie supplemented from other tax revenue) and profits are taken off shore.
Selling the Hudson Bay company should never have been allowed. Again syphoning profits from Canadian revenue.
Most people I know enjoy our neighbors. That doesn't mean we give them free reign.
The US has long had a US first policy and Canada needs to do more to protect it own soveregnty.
Carry on.

That Hudson Bay Co.must of been 200 yrs old.Sad the historical place sold.Back in the day you could trade fish and animal pelts for clothes, beer, rum, kevlar sticks. The first major retail industry in Canada.
I can remember Sgt.Preston of the Yukon(and his dog "King") chasing theives who robbed a Hudson Bay shipment.Usually the culprit was a clever French guy named "Lucky Piere" but the mounties "always get their man"..

Founded in 1670. Nothing could be more symbolic of Canada, yes, bigger than hockey. Like I said, some things should be protected and preserved.
