I've been using Training Peaks since last October, keeping to the mileage requirements at the very least. For the past two weeks, I've been going off the program a bit and only riding 3 days/week, not including races, with each ride being zone 3-5 for 3 hours on average. And despite the fact that my CTL is dropping, I keep setting new personal bests on my rides. I'm guessing this is what peaking feels like. The day off in between rides seems be just the right amount of recovery.
Is this routine sustainable and for how long? Putting in the miles 5 to 6 days a week to keep the CTL rising has been more than frustrating. I'm just wondering if I can do without all the boring Zone 2 fillers during race season and keep feeling this strong through the summer and early fall?

Considering that pros often can't peak for an entire 3 week tour, chances of you (or me) holding a peak till fall are pretty low.

I plan a peak to last about 2 weeks.

But you may be seeing the results of getting enough rest more than reaching a peak. 3 days plus racing might be the right amount of training. And if you cut out anything, it should be Z2- you're supposed to get most of that done early in the season.

So how do you know if you're actually peaking? I reached a peak according to TP back in early May, but it didn't feel like it.

And if my current routine is ideal, which I think it is for this time of year, do I just ignore that my CTL will continue to slowly drop over time?
