Gina's new helmet! Geeze, the price keeps going up and up and up! $200-$250 for the good stuff now. She has 2 Pneumos that were $140 a few years back and just wanted a white/silver helmet to match stuff other than pink and blue.

We looked at all the bike shops and ended up at REI. Not real happy with the helmet but it's the only one at a decent price. For $90 it's ok but seems a little bulky at the retention system but not willing to spend $250. Hopefully it's not too hot in the sunshine :D

We looked at some Bell equivalents but the little red, knob adjuster, just didn't like it

Giro Stylus

Does it look OK?

Cheesy cell pics and yes, she needs to work on a smile.:D

Geeze Beanz, spring for the good stuff! (Said by someone who has never spent more than $35 on any helmet.....ever.)

i was just discussing how 240 for a helmet seemed ludicrous at Performance last weekend....

the helmet looks nice though! more importantly, how's it feel?

Ya know, if she really wanted it, we would but the $250 don't look that impressive either. I posted about it the other day, not impressive at all.:(

It's a bit easier to say "I payed $100 for this helmet even though it's not all that great" vs "I payed $250 for this helmet even though it's not all that great". :D

I think it looks good but she's not REAL excited about it!:D

She said it feels good but not quite as good as her Pneumos. She's a little worried about ventilation but time will tell. :D
She was a bit happier when we got home and I adjusted the strap properly.:thumb:

Tell me about it, after 12 bikes, we cut back to 7. Too expensive maintaining 12 bikes. (6 roadies, 2 tandems, 2 MTB and 2 hybrids :D)

I think it looks great on her too.:D

Looks good. I wonder what makes a helmet worth $250 though. My Bell Lumen was only $60 and I'm sure it will protect my noggin just as well as a more expensive one.

I don't know! Our Pneumos are very comfy compared to others that I've paid $60'ish. But IMO I don't think they can get any more comfy cause they raise the price $130 more. They feel the same as the Pneumo trying them on, just inflation I guess.

I compare my Pneumos to my Bell Aquila ( $50 MTB helmet) and yes, there is a difference in comfort and ventilation. But no difference in fit or feel from the Pneumo to the Ionos or Atmos, not $130 worth.

I think helmets provide so little protection its not really worth getting into "this one protects me better than that one"

It seems the difference is styling & ventilation for the most part.

I'm still using my 14 year old super-expensive, top-of-the-line at the time Giro .... I'm almost down to an amortized cost of $10 a year. :D

Oh, that helmet looks fine btw! I'm sure she'll warm up to it.

I must agree. But she does have the Pink Pneumo (4 years) and the Blue (1 or 2 years old) perfectly fine. She just wanted the white to switch outfits.:D I have a nearly new helmet sitting in the box. I use it for special occasions so it's only been worn 3 or 4 times in the last 2 years. The other helmets I wear are my beater helmets, a Pneumo and an Eclipse. The red white and blue Pneumo the most as the finish gets damaged by bug spray used while riding in the mountains. Glad I got the new'ish helmet in preserve since they don't make this model anymore.:D

all helmets, from $20 walmart to $260 roadie porn have to pass the exact same impact tests...so you're never going to be paying more for protection. the money goes towards weight, style and aeration.

the way I think about it...if you're willing to pay 300 bucks to buy carbon fibre parts for your bike and save 10 grams, might as well pay 300 bucks for a helmet to get the same benefit.

then again, i dont actually wear a helmet

Nice. Not reminiscent of of a mushroom at all, and sometimes that's all you can ask of a helmet :)

Machka and I have our preferred brands of helmet, and both are in the right price range. The brands each have helmets in a range of colours that we can match our bikes (the exception is green -- almost no-one makes a decent green helmet).

Anyway, Gina looks great in that helmet. Strap adjustment does make a difference.

Aren't we a vain lot when our kit has to match our bikes?

I had the black/carbon looking stylus and recently switched to the atmos. The stylus didn't keep my head as cool as the atmos while riding, but it did its job. I also didn't pay $90 for it, I only paid $45 in 2008, and that was the reason I bought it.

That's what I figured. Since I don't care about fashion, I'll stick with my Lumen. It's not too heavy either, and I don't overheat while climbing in the sun. Good enough for me. :thumb:
