Southern California - Anyone want to ride the Angeles Crest Highway from Hollywood??

I'm looking to do a nice ride from Hollywood to the Clear Creek Ranger Station in the ANF. Total mileage is about 40 round-trip with around 3,500 vertical feet in elevation gain. I haven't done it yet. I'm entry level, just started riding road last year, but have experience on MTB's. If you are interested let me know. I think the earlier in the morning the better. Maybe leave by sunrise to avoid the heat.

Actually I was thinking Sunday the 26th or maybe the first Sunday of July. The earlier the better in my opinion. I was thinking of being on the road around sunrise. Meetup, I'm flexible. Somewhere in East Hollywood around LACC or Glendale would be fine. It would be nice to get a few people.

I did Burbank to Red Box last weekend - that was approx 4800 ft - 5800 when I added Mt wilson!

You do realize that there is nothing at Clear Creek? It's just a wide spot in the road where the Angeles Forest Highway and Angeles Crest Highways meet. There is the forest camp, which is just housing I believe and a small hut on the other side of the road with infrequent hours where you can purchase a Forest Adventure Pass. Oh, and a cinder block pit toilet. I frequently see cyclists in the parking lot, but I don't even think there is any water there. Maybe there is?

The reason you see riders in the parking lot at the forest service information hut is because there is water there, and the hours for the information center are pretty regular. . . Saturdays and Sundays, closed weekdays. Next water available is 4 miles further up at Red Box, then nothing until Charlton Flats.

Since the OP indicates Clear Creek as the destination, it wouldn't be unusual to burn through a bottle of water in the nine miles from Foothill in La Crescenta to Clear Creek, especially with temps being what they are presently, so it's a good place to refill on water before heading back down, which ever route you take.

To the last two posters, thanks for the information. I realize there is not much at Clear Creek and we may or may not continue on, it depends on how we feel.

As an update to my original post. I have a day picked and a departure location.
July 16 - meetup at the LA Zoo parking lot.

OK 2flats, we'll see you at the Zoo parking lot at 7am tomorrow. I'll be on a blue Cannondale road bike.

Its still early but I havent received my brake/shift lever from UPS yet - even if i get it into the LBS i dont think they will have it ready by the end of the day. All in all im not sure if I can make it.
