Hello all,

I have an 89 xt hub that I'm trying to convert from QR to a true bolt on axle, however I don't know the dimensions or tpi of the old qr bits. I would like to reuse the old cone nuts since they have the proper rubber dust covers on them. Anyone know what dimensions Shimano used and where i could procure an axle to fit?

The axle (it's a REAR, right?) should be M10x1 and probably 146mm long. Wheels Mfg. makes a solid axle w/10x1 threading that's 174mm as well as one for tandem use that's 187mm long, you can trim either to your perfect size with hacksaw and grinder.

No need to shorten those axles - the OP wants a bolt on hub. Thus the extra length is needed.

I checked several old (early 90's) Shimano exploded views of nutted hubs. For 130mm spacing, Shimano was using 180mm axles, and 185mm for 135mm spacing.

I should clarify, I would like to do this to both the front and the rear hubs. However I am focusing on the rear. So with the 10 X 1 X 174 axle my original cone nuts will thread right on correct?

Yes, that should work, and if laura is correct that the axle length for 130 spacing was 180mm, then you should have plenty of axle for track nuts if you use 174mm with 126mm OLN spacing. The axle for a front Shimano hub should be 9M x 1 x (maybe) 155mm, again Wheels Mfg. makes solid replacements (any LBS that can order from QBP can get them, or try biketoolsetc.com).

Depending on your goal, the allen wrench tightened QRs are a good alternative (if you are looking for security). You can find them just about anywhere.

The allen QR skewers work well on a commuter but this bike is going to see trails and I've had some problems with the allen skewers either stripping or not getting super tight. Also the bike has vertical dropouts so I'll stick with the known clamping power of a true blue bolt on setup.
