Funny I know...

I took a ride from my house to the supermarket to get milk and going down the hill like 5 dogs from 4 streets above came running and barking to me. In that moment they could not get to me, I passed too fast for them but in my way back the story was different, in the climb one of them reach my ankle and bit me. It was superficial but it scared the hell out of me.

Any suggestions for next time? throw them water, a baseball bat maybe? :D

Are these just stray dogs or do they belong to someone?

Stop and walk. Dogs like to chase.

^^^ Yeah, I agree the best is to make friends with them, you can always bribe a dog with biscuits.

Nope, that's the WORST idea in the world because it rewards the dogs for chasing, and maybe another rider will not have any treats to give them.

My methods are:
1. squirt with my water bottle. This works most of the time.
2. stop and get off the bike and walk it. I've only had to do this once or twice.
3. pepper spray. I carry it, but so far I've never had to use it on a dog. One of the first two methods have worked every time so far.

It's pretty hard for them to chase you when you're STOPPED and making friends with them.

I shouldn't have to stop and mingle with your dog. I'm out for a bike ride.

I love dogs, except while I'm on a bike. Get off and walk is a good idea, however pepper spray is as well. If you were bit, a trip to the doctor would be in order.

I hate all animals. Especially dogs that chase me. Why are all mean dogs associated with junky ass houses?

Bingo. The problem with all this advice about walking with biscuits is that, while it may work for you guys, it might be the worst thing the OP could do. If you are confident around aggressive animals then I agree that you can usually back them down. But dogs (like most animals) can smell fear ("It was superficial but it scared the hell out of me."). If this is just a bunch of yappy neighborhood house pets then fine. On the other hand, if they are big dogs operating with a pack mentality, then the OP needs to be at least armed with something JIC all the Cesar Millan wannabees are wrong.
Probably wouldn't hurt to hear a little more detail from OP.

Perhaps I am missing the point. What exactly does my dog have to do with this?

There are many ways to deal with dogs. Giving them treats is one of them, and it's certainly not the "worst idea in the world." Ask any rural UPS driver.

In this case they are a pack of 5 stray dogs and they are always hanging out in the corner of that street. Maybe the guy who lives in the corner feeds them. Anyway I,m not in any mood of making friends with them.

My wife said to me to go and talk to the guy from the house in the corner but I said for WTF!! I've been watching these dogs for years every time I pass by in my truck and yes the guy is going to say because now you bought a bike I have to clean the corner of dogs so that you can ride? whatever going to talk to the guy.

Next time I will try spray them with the bottle of water if that does not work another method will come up:D...

Let's see if they are outside later today and I will take a photo with my cell phone. I 'll let you know all how is working...;)

I have no problem with making friends with dogs, but feeding them as a reward for chasing cyclists.... well, just think about it, huh? Do you really want to encourage them to chase bicycles?

What type of tires are on your bike? I have a road bike (smooth quiet tires) and a hybrid bike with semi knobby tires. Guess which bike tires sets a Rat Dog off and flying at me with everything it has? Yep... and how do I handle it? I charge right at it. It backs off. Haven't had to opportunity to try that on a big dog yet. But I avoid the knobby tires when riding the block as much as possible unless I am prepared to fly past the house this little long-haired RAT Dog lives at. Biscuit? Ya, I got a biscuit for the dog. Maybe a hard , stale one that will feel like a rock. (Hope the wife doesn't read that) ;0/

To answer your question directly, I have no problem with dogs chasing me - only with them biting me. I have 3-5 neighboring farm dogs that run up to a half mile with me on any given ride. I guess that's the same as "chasing", only I'm not scared of them.

If you stop and chill the dogs out before you give them treats they won't associate chasing with reward - they'll associate the reward with you. Therefore they won't bite.

FYI and just in case anyone got their feelings hurt, the dog whisperer photo was not targeted at any one person, I just thought it was funny.

And for the rest of the tough guys, I carry a SBS and a glock 40 on all my rides due to 1) I am a total badass also and 2) the thousands of daily reports in the media about cyclists being set upon and mauled by roving packs of stray dogs. /sarcasm

I don't carry for protection from dogs - it's just a convenient side benefit.
Also, by your tone I'm guessing that you've never been in a situation where some random DB had your life in his hands.

You are right on. The only way a dog will associate a reward with chasing is if you give such reward while they are chasing you. I've been bitten by more dogs then you can shake a stick at, and the only thing that works if you don't want to be bitten again is to make friends with them. Period!

What's the benefit? It makes you feel safer, thereby validating the fact that you carry? Or do you actually shoot dogs?

Bad guess. I too have a CCW permit but I only carry in case I need to exact revenge on ignorant DB's who **** with my dog.

In my area there is a leash law. Dog owners are not allowed to let their animals run free (off property). A waterbottle is my quick way to deal with them. Aside from that, I won't tolerate dogs chasing/harassing me riding on a public thoroughfare. The dog/owner gets reported to Animal Control office, and AC will have the owner restrain the dog or impound the animal. Done deal.

As much as I am an animal lover, no way do I put up with this loose/bike chasing dog BS.

First of all, l-i-g-h-t-e-n---u-p. My initial comment was a casual quip, nothing more. I have not in the past, nor do I have any future intention of shooting any dogs, but if I or someone I happened to be with were attacked by a truly vicious dog, damn right I'd put it down, but even then only as a last resort.

Second, it certainly sounded like you were ridiculing people who CC and, without exception, everyone I know who does takes it very seriously. So based on my experience your comments tend to belie your claim, however I will take you at your word.

And yes, I'm really just another lying 13-year-old with an internet connection and an over-active imagination.

Lets all take 3 steps back and chill out, because it's not getting us anywhere. Lets just agree to disagree, and we can all handle the chasing dogs the way we think best. That's all I'm going to say about the subject.

That's a reasonable answer and I'm happy to hear it.

Second, it certainly sounded like you were ridiculing people who CC and, without exception, everyone I know who does takes it very seriously.

That was not my intention - I was actually ridiculing those who would even think to bring up the topic of firearms in a dog thread. I assure you I take my CCW permit very seriously - to the point of debating whether or not I should even mention that I have one.

So based on my experience your comments tend to belie your claim, however I will take you at your word.

Thanks?

I think I read about this tactic on BF. Dogs are instinctual hunters. They chase their prey down from behind and to the side and aim for the neck. If you watch dogs give chase, they will usually let you pass instead of heading directly toward you at full speed from the front. Its speed allows it to catch up to you from behind, but if you watch its trajectory as they close the distance from behind and to the side, you can disrupt its run by TURNING YOUR BIKE INTO IT. Their peripheral vision is very good, and they will immediately change direction AWAY FROM YOU, and this slows them down enough for you to get away. I have tried this on several dogs on my routes and it has worked. Just be sure to watch for cars, and don't let them smell fear on you, so don't panic.

Doohickie
06-24-11, 05:14 PM
Yeah, that jives with what a bike cop told me; he said to ride into the track of a dog. Same basic idea: They are in hunt mode, but as soon as you cut across their track, they become the prey and they don't like that.
