Does anyone have any experience with this bike from REI? I'm thinking about getting one for commuting. Thanks in advance for any input.

Yes, I bought a 2004 REI Novara Safari and use it for commuting to work. I ride 4 miles, one way, most of it on street, some across field and under trees. Even ride in 5" of snow at 20 degrees F. I have front and rear racks, front and rear panniers, handbar pack, fenders. I have used it to transport a weeks worth of groceries or tent and supplies for a long weekend self-sustaining ride.
Best bike I've owned for everything but racing. Even at that the gear ratios are great for some high speed travel (30+ MPH on flats)
