Mountain Biking - Suspension Seat Post

Are the suspension seat post good for a lite wight person 110 pounds and ive seen teh Rock Shox and the Cane Creek Thudbusters

anyone have them and do u like them

I hope you get a better reply, but fwiw I tried out the Rock Shox when I was considering a hardtail. LBS recommended them. The ride was a lot more enjoyable with it. Not inexpensive, but I would buy one if I had a hard tail. Only caution from LBS was not to buy a cheap one. Try to find a LBS that will loan you one to try out.

i got one off of ebay for like 15 bucks. never rode a "nicer" one like RS or CC, but i can tell you mine was fine in terms of comfort, especially if you ride an aluminum frame. a lot easier on your back. note, it doesn't help on downhill or anything because your legs are not "suspended" when you are off the saddle.

I have a Tandem and any stoker on one will tell you they are necessary. On a Tandem you spend a lot more time sitting, and the Pilot does not always warn the stoker of holes or bumps coming up. Very Painful. However, on a solo, you can see the lumpy bits coming up and you will be out of the saddle. No need for a Suspension post. Perhaps no need, but if you feel you need one, then do get a good quality one. The Thudbuster works, but you need at least 4" of stem out of the seat tube. Action on it is smooth, and Does not affect leg length as much as a conventional up and down suspension post. The cheap suspension posts wear out pretty quick, or have stiction, or just do not work.

By the way not as light as you at 150lbs, but the thudbuster set up for me has taken 190lbs, and a youth at 100lbs with no problem.

I've wondered how a suspension seatpost compares to a carbon fiber seatpost as far as absorbing bumps. Any ideas?

I would imagine, total guess, that while carbon would be good for absorbtion, the suspension seatpost would react quite differently and be more plush. I don't imagine there is a real comparison :)

Thanks, Mael. I've wondered about that. I've read a fair amount of posts where the writer said they put on a CF seatpost and it really took some of the harsh edge off their HT (when sitting, of course ; )

Again I am just guessing based on what I know about carbon and suspension. One is more anti-vibration the other is anti-small bump...

I have a Thudbuster. I love it. If you do get one get the new version. The seat attachment/adjustment bracket is much better.

Thanks! How can you tell which one is the new one? (I suppose I could go to Cane Creek's site.) There are two at pricepoint.com; one has 3.9" travel, one has 3" (and they look quite different).

Yeah, the new seat adjuster is what EVERY setup should be like. It lets you fine tune the seat position without "guessing" or taking the thing apart.

You have to check each vendors. The "new" one will be labeled 3G. The old one is the 2G.

Cane Creek no longer makes the 2G. So the "specials" for cheapo Thudbusters will typically be closeout 2G models.
