BMX - ok random question on dropouts

i have what i think is a 98 haro supra dj bike right yesterday i got my new set of rims for it. but the rims i got are brand new not even out yet. so here's the thing. what is the standard dropout width? 14mm?what are the odds my bike has 14mm dropouts?

First, it's a wheel, not a rim; a rim is just the hoop. Second, if you don't know what size axles you have, you shouldn't be buying new wheels. And third, I highly, highly doubt that you have some wheelset that isn't even available yet.

most likely if you have a 98 haro it has 3/8th inch drop outs. I have a 99 tr2.1 and it had 3/8th inch dropouts i think they changed them later becuase my friends bikes have 14mm. If you really need to put this wheelset on you could grind it out but its not that good of an idea especialy if you dont do it evenly. And if you do choose to do that only grind the frame you would weaken the forks way to much if you were to grind them.

You can buy a grinder for $10 and your problem is solved..

you dont really need to measure, 3/8 is kinda skinny and 14mm is super freaking fat..... i think those are the only sizes, right?

if your used to 3/8 you think 14mm is HUGE and if your used to 14MM you think 3/8 is SMALL

I said to use a ruler because if he was asking what he had then he wouldn't know the difference between 3/8 or 14mm. If you have 3/8 and want to make it 14mm, then just use a grinder to make the slots bigger.

Like I said, that's a wheel, not just a rim.

And like I also said, you should know what size axle slots you have prior to buying a new wheel.

edit: I hope that you're damn smooth if you plan on running a 32h wheel in the back.

listen to beerman, he has only given valid points. But sometimes people get lucky, right place right time.

I would have to agree with Beerman on this:

1. You bought 32 spoked wheels when most guys run 48s. The smoothest riders run 36s but they are often sponsored &/or darn smooth.

2. You may never see those in online shops because they aren't 36 or 48 spoke wheels which are pretty much standard. I have no idea if they are generally available at any shop, but good for you for getting them.

3. If your bike is not 14mm then you have two options: First, you can grind your frame to 14mm and get a 14mm fork. OR, you can get two slotted 14mm axles which allow the 14mm hubs to fit the 3/8" dropouts

4. Why would you buy a wheelset without asking about it first, then ***** when others ask why you bought them when you clearly did not know about what you needed?

5. Don't ever get a job in your life - you may actually receive some constructive criticism which you apparently are ill-equipped to deal with yet.

ok one where did any of you read i baught new wheels...?? i said i got new wheels... yes that is from AlexRims Aclass. i ride for them not as a bmxer but as a freeride/downhill mtn biker. i have like 4 or 5 sets of rims from them for my mtb bike and i was telling them how i am getting into dirt jumping on my bike and they said hey we have these new wheels. wanna set to play with and beat up. so i said ok....now i might just use a grinder but i think i might go out and buy me a new updated Dj bike so any suggestions??? now dont be ignorant or crued and dont make a jackaass of yourself just try to help if not nevermind and have fun *****

A standard dropout usually fit 10mm axle, a standard axle is 3/8" (9.5mm) for both front & rear. But Since freeride needs stronger axle to maintain the straight from hi-jump, so pro racer ask for 1/2" & recently even up to 14mm axle.

There's a previous period, the shop ask the enlarged axle needs 2 cutted slot to fit 3/8" drop out. But near the recently period, the supplier of fork made 14mm as standard size, too. So the hub manufacture save the slot. You can only choose exactly 3/8 or 14mm in precisely size to fit on your drop out

Dude,

If you didn't pay for the wheels, and they only come in 14mm then ask them if they have slotted 14mm axles. Those'll fit your dropouts.

Otherwise, just cut your frame to 14mm. That's what I did on my old bike and it was fine. It's what a LOT of people do to their bikes. Some shops will even cut your frame for you.

I cut my kink empire when I got my cassette because I couldnt wait for my new frame to ride it and it went super. I spent 10 dollars for a grinder and yea, it went well.
