Is that an after market conversion to make it a trike?

+1

DavidW56 - the price is about right for a mint Schwinn tandem plus a mint trike conversion - in the pictures it does not appear to be mint to me.......

Thanks for the replies, everyone. I was hoping my dad would be interested in the trike -- he lost his eyesight, but he has a close woman friend who was an avid cyclist and would certainly get him out on a tandem. But he doesn't want it.

Thanks also for the assessment, I did think it was a bit pricey, but put it down to its rarity.

Worksman makes a tandem trike of the beach-cruiser style if you're interested.

I'm not sure I see the advantage myself. An upright tricycle is tippy in a different way from a bike, but it's still tippy. You're just going to fall over while going around a corner instead of falling over while almost stopped.

A tandem trike used to be built. There is a children's version in the Museum of Childhood, and the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh, Scotland.

"The Frankby " tricycle. Made in Nottingham, c. 1900

Here's another one, at the same Flickr account (http://www.flickr.com/photos/39151498@N07/sets/72157627018439839/).

I'm thinking that Schwinn marketed a trike conversion that could be installed at the dealer.

A couple of years ago I tried to buy an old Schwinn tandem trike rusting away about an hour north of Little Rock, AR. The owner had no plans to restore but would not consider selling.

There are some well- liked recumbent tandem trikes.

Also, delta trikes can be easily hooked together for form a tandem or even a chain of trikes.
