I've got a Burley Piccolo on the way, and I'm trying to figure out which bike I want to use it with. Does anyone have experience using the Moose Rack with a fat 700c tire (or maybe even a 29er)? What size tire have you been able to fit under there?

I suppose it depends on the bike, and where its mounting eyelets are. If your eyelets are, say, above the axle, you'll have more room than if they're to the rear of and in line with the axle. This might add up to an inch difference in tire clearance.

Yeah, I knew there would be variables, but I still thought it might help me get a general idea of what I might expect if I knew others' experience. Like if 3 people wrote in and said that they could barely get the rack to clear a 700c x 28, then I'd go ahead and give up hope on having it fit my 29er. :)

But, as of this morning UPS site says it's out for delivery, so i"ll know soon enough one way or the other. . .

My moose rack fits fine on my old bike with 27 x 1-1/4 tires (so, larger diameter than 700 x 28), with plenty of room to spare (at least 2-3", I think, though I don't have the bike in front of me right now). The eyelets I have it attached to are probably close to 1" above the center of the axle.

If I remember to do it, I may go measure the actual length of the rack stay later.

At the narrowest point on our moose rack it is 3.5". You would have to be using a fat boy tire to even come close to the struts. Ours is probably a late 90s model. I do not know if there have been any modifications to the rack over the years.

I do not know of a rack that has tire width clearance issues.

Not only does the Moose rack easily clear my 700c tires, but it also clears the Planet Bike fenders over those tires, with lots of room to spare.

It easily cleared my 700cx38 tire and Zefal rear fender. It looks like enough of us have chimed in to give you peace of mind before it arrives. :-)

I did end up getting a Bontrager 29x2.00 29-3 tire and it worked well. Just thought I'd share that here in case someone comes a long and searches the forum with the same question.
