Fellas,

I have done nothing but road cycling but a couple of friends are trying to convince to take up mountain biking, too. Well, I started to look around for a used bike. Found a 2005 Cannondale Scapel about an hour away from me and it looks to be in very good shape. For reference, I have a pretty knowledge about road bikes but not that much about mountain bikes. Looking at bikepedia, it looks to be a pretty decent bike (didn't see a msrp on there). Obviously, the 2011 model is all carbon and is ridiculously expensive. The 2005 model is aluminum with sram x7 and x9 mix parts. Asking price is $1500. Does this sound reasonable if the bike is in top shape? And if it is, what price point do I need to counter if this bike fits me?

Thanks

***I don't know why I keep getting this annoying "Transformer" pop-up on every post I try to read. BF is really getting out-of-control with ads.***

To your question of whether an 05 Scalpel with SRAM x.7 &.9 is worth $1500, IMO no. It's a nice XC bike from all the reviews I've read, (I'm looking at an '05 frame); but I think 1500 for a 6 year old MTB is a stretch. What fork and wheelset does it have?

Thanks for responding. I'm not sure what wheels he has on there from the picture but I think it has Lefty front shocks. I thought the price is a bit steep for an old bike. A buddy of mine is trying to sell me his 2010 BMC SF01 for $1700. I'm just a little hesitant to spend that much right now. Anyway, here is the listing of the bike.

I've never gotten a pop-up on this site. I use IE, Firefox, Opera, mobile / classic, XP, Vista, 7, Android, WM...not one single popup since 2005.

Definitely a good looking bike with a lot of expensive bling hanging on it. It may be worth the asking price, but if this is going to be your first MTB, you could get a whole lotta hardtail for a lot less.

First time for me too. Especially one that was a movie preview that pretty much covered the screen and had no cancel button. Thanks for letting me know all the stuff your running tho, I'll alert the pirates.:thumb:

Just to put a period on the OP's original question of whether an '05 Scalpel 1000 was worth $1500 in good condition. The '05 Scalpel frame I was following on ebay sold for 350 + 30 shipping. I think you can get a pretty good used wheelset for 300, fork 400, & gruppo 200; which adds up to $1280. I'm not sure what lefties are worth, but the seller was apparently in the ball park.

Scan your computer.

I have some pretty good protection, and I scanned after it happened twice last night on 2 different posts I was trying to read. Scan came up with zip. I'm surprised noone else saw it.

Could you get the URL that ad leads to please? It never pops up for me, even if I use my test account that uses no adblocks so I can monitor the ads. If I can get the URL, we can block that ad.

Thanks Boilermaker, but I'm not sure how to retrieve the url. Good to know you have our backs tho.:)

I keep thinking I need to get a GD pipe for some reason. Meerschaum maybe.

Thanks for the response. I may just offer him around $1200 to see what happens.
