Got a ticket today, 69 in a 55. Not pissed at anyone, just me. I was coming back from Michigan, after a good ride. I guess it happens, just a part of life as a driver. I really think that I will be more careful now, though, becaue the 90 bucks it is going to cost is tough to pay. Sh*t happens!

Sorry about the ticket!

(RANT)

My major complaint is that it seems the primary emphasis of police enforcement is on speeding, while in my experience the major causes of accidents are tailgaiting, illegal ("daring") left turns across traffic, running red lights, weaving in and out of traffic lanes, and such things as cell phones and not paying attention.

Yet, the emphasis is on the radar gun.

Two days ago, I saw a police radar trap while riding my bike on a street. I needed to cross the street, so being ultra safety conscious during this time when I am on an anti-coagulant, I got off the bike and walked across the busy street as a pedestrian. I got to the center island, and this yo-yo driver zooms right past me on the road I was crossing.

I looked at the police (there were 3 of them) and said, "Isn't she supposed to stop for me?" and the officer replied "Yes, we were just talking about that!"

Now there were THREE police cars just sitting there, and one officer with the radar gun. Did anyone try to stop the lady who had just illegally violated my right-of-way? Nope, they just nodded and I pedaled away.

That is one example of what I mean by the emphasis on catching speeders to the ignoring of other violations.

speeding tickets are nothing but revenue generators. Cops are nothing but extreme metermaids.

As the saying goes - "Follow the money."

Besides, it is a lot easier to issue speeding tickets. Tickets for other violations require a lot more effort and thought.

Man, I thought this was going to be a 69 in a 55 on a bike speeding ticket thread...

I thought it was a bike speeding ticket, too. I was going to congratulate you.

Not as cheap as Montana. I got a ticket there for 85 in a 70 about 18 months ago. Since I was from out of state I had to post a bond equivalent to the fine. It cost me $20. Funny thing was, the last time I was through Montana, there was no daytime speed limit on the interstate. The signs said: "A Reasonable and Prudent Speed". That was interesting driving. Too bad that lasted only a few years.

When I lived in MT, a friend of mine got in a race in his Camero with some out of stater in another all souped up car (forget what kind) - he got pulled over, and the cop only walked up to his window and said :

"You're from Montana - you should know better. I'm going after your buddy."

This was before 'reasonable and prudent'.

We get stopped here for drving the speed limit or under. The cops consider that "suspicious behavior" as you aren't speeding and trying to elude the police.

Damn "Patroit Act".

For real. I hope the sheriff understands he has to answer back to the people in two years when he wants reelection.

In Montana they still basically won't pull over an in-stater until they're going about 30 over the limit. Out-of-staters, on the other hand, get pulled over at around 15-20 over. However, last I heard, it's a $20 fine, as ajay said, paid directly to the cop with no written ticket/record, so you really don't have to report it to your insurance company. Is that the way it worked for you, ajay? Or was there a written up ticket and a record for it and everything?

When I drove over the road in the 70's, I was pulled over in Ohio for exceeding the speed limit. The cop told me that I couldn't proceed until I paid the $75 dollar fine. I asked him where I went to pay it at 4 in the morning. I couldn't wait, I had to be in Chicago to deliver later that day. He said " Do you carry credit cards?"

I responded that I did. Well he reached under his seat and whipped out a credit card machine and 2 minutes later, I was on my way.

There was a written ticket. I could have gone to my trial. It was scheduled for the end of July. Since I wasn't going to be in Montana at the end of July I decided to skip it and forfeit the $20 bond. My wife thought the whole incident was hilarious. She spent the entire time I was getting the ticket laughing. I guess a radar detector doesn't help when you're the only west bound car for 3 miles and the only east bound traffic is Trooper Troy and his handy dandy radar gun.

There was a written ticket.

Well that's my bad, then. As I said, last I heard. Obviously it's been a while since I heard.
