Can anyone find Benefits of Caffeine for cycling? would drinking coffee before a ride offer benefits?
I know it would be really bad though to drink Red Bulls or rock stars or any sports drink prior to a ride ? what can u all say?

I drink a gargantuan mug of coffee every morning. Sometimes I take my daily ride (8 hard miles) right after that, sometimes at the end of the day.
I have noticed big differences from being tired or not, and from the foods I eat, but never anything associated with coffee. There might be some marginal effect that I am not noticing.
If you tolerate caffeine well, there's no reason not to have a cup before, during or after a ride. There's a long history of stimulants in cycling, from coffee to pot belge. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pot_Belge)

Yes, the benefits of caffeine are well known. The coffee buzz is a minor effect. The main effect is that caffeine spares glycogen during the ride, and helps to replenish it after the ride. Although I prefer beer after ride, many folks like a Coke or similar. For more info, google "caffeine glycogen". All that said, I wouldn't use Red Bull as a sports drink. One right before a ride should be fine, not the sugar free.

Just skimming a few of the search results (http://scholar.google.com/scholar?q=caffeine+glycogen&hl=en&btnG=Search&as_sdt=1%2C48&as_sdtp=on), it doesn't seem very conclusive. Some of the studies only used 5 or 8 subjects.

I use one or the other, with no real reason, other that it's what I'm in the mood for. You are your best guinea pig- experiment!
